A great pleasure to chat to @drdomdavies.bsky.social about infrastructure, comics, and why using visual essays changes how we observe, think and write about the world.

i.e. “she’s a very nice woman but she’s a woman”…
Trump on María Corina Machado: "I think it'd be very tough for her to be the leader. She doesn't have the support or the respect within the country. She's a very nice woman but she doesn't have the respect."

And that Trump will stand by when China invades Taiwan… The return of classical geopolitics, colonial posturing around spheres of influence, and unashamed imperial hubris will make this year, yet again, one of bloodshed. How can our children ever trust us ?
After this, the EU should absolutely proceed on the assumption that Trump meant what he said about Greenland. Nothing is off the table anymore.

In 2026: Generative AI is not inevitable. You can say no. You can refuse. You can reject the disgusting lukewarm slop that the richest and worst people in the world are trying to force-feed you. You can tell them to eat shit and die mad. You can break the machine

First sunrise of 2026 overlooking the Alps and the Mont Blanc, after an ascent in the very cold morning. A gorgeous 🇨🇭 moment, followed by a fondue for lunch 🫕.

Our thoughts with the people, visitors and first responders in Crans-Montana, in the Valais, facing the worst start to their year.

Oh, Stuart, thank you for including “Bornées / Along the Line” on this marvelous list. I’m absolutely chuffed!

Mary Shelley doesn't get enough credit for not only anticipating the silver-spooned narcissist techbro who recklessly creates technology without thinking through the consequences, but also for knowing that said techbro would be an absolutely terrible father.

This is not Trump being stupid, tho Trump is a very stupid person. This is not Trump being played, tho Trump is one of the most easily manipulated people who’s ever lived. No, the truth is scarier. This is Trump working for & siding with Putin. This is Trump, the Russian asset.
Trump: "Russia wants to see Ukraine succeed. It sounds a little strange but President Putin was very generous in his feeling toward Ukraine succeeding, including supplying energy, electricity and other things at very low prices."

Border hopping in the sun, up above the stratus clouds that have engulfed Geneva for what feels like weeks. Walking slowly along the 🇨🇭🇫🇷 border, in the Canton de Vaud / Dpt de l’Ain. We saw old souls garding imagined lines across the centuries, for successive political masters #alongtheline #bornées

We--educators & anyone to whom educators talk (it's Xmas, tell your families!)--need to convey that the framing that a new revolution in education is at hand, & we need to come up with new & inventive ways to police our students' honesty AND still carry out the educational mission is STUPID FRAMING.

If someone says to you, "what are you doing about students' use of AI?" ask them, "do you think that this should be my problem? How good do you think my response can be? Should it not be up to legislators & administrators to defend against a commercial industry's attack on your child's education?"

Like the Kremlin does.
Trump’s 'National Security Strategy' declares the US will focus on 'cultivating resistance to Europe’s current trajectory within European nations.' That amounts to a declaration the US will promote regime change in countries that remain governed by pro-democracy parties that support the EU and NATO"
Make America Weak
Trump is systematically undermining America's interests at home and abroad.

Just say no, indeed.
"This promise of an AI future, is really just a collective anxiety that wealthy people have about how well they're gonna be able to control us in the future."

Incredible words.

Academics now need a section of their cv for heavily cited papers by them that they did not actually write.
Closing out my year with a journal editor shocker 🧵

Checking new manuscripts today I reviewed a paper attributing 2 papers to me I did not write. A daft thing for an author to do of course. But intrigued I web searched up one of the titles and that's when it got real weird...

Or just keep platforming Republicans who have a 5th grade understanding of biology so they get more trans people killed, sure 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thank you to @stuartelden.bsky.social who had the idea in the first place!
