BACK OF THE SHELF - J-Horror After J-Horror PART TWO is finally here! In this episode, a new crop of Japanese horror films invoke a deeper appreciation for the country's rich folklore through The Inerasable, Howling Village, and Koji Shiraishi's Senritsu Kaiki series. Enjoy!

Remember in Texas Chainsaw Massacre when the family is trying to get the barely conscious, half-dead elderly patriarch to hit the girl over the head with the mallet but he no longer has the strength to hold it?

That’s Trump.

It should be noted that after every queer writer in the industry has been told that queer stories are too risky for mainstream media rn, the two biggest shows at the end of 2025 have queer protagonist

This movie is SO good. Written by Steven Volk of Ghostwatch fame!
My ghost story for Christmas is the underseen film The Awakening, about a post-WWI spiritualism debunker (Rebecca Hall) called to a traumatized boy’s school where her education and modern ways are a subject of uneasy fascination, and her beliefs are challenged by an apparently irrefutable specter.

This is a really good point that I had not run into before: these "creators" have no further insight into their alleged creation than the average audience member and that is why it cannot be called art (besides all the other obvious reasons).

For the Monday crowd, Koji Shiraishi’s KINKI is another jaw-dropping mixed-media odyssey from Japan’s found-footage poet laureate, whose deft use of narrative and faux-documentary gives striking emotional weight to what its characters choose not to capture on camera. This was nicely done. A good chunk of JTC1 lost in the adaptation process, but understandably so. Really loved when they’d overlap concurrent scenes as the stage rotated, it created such a suffocating atmosphere. Interesting how they positioned this as a “happy” ending for some. Worth the wait.
Holy moly, it's a good discovery day. Never thought I'd see the day when I'd get to see Ju-on: THE LIVE – a stage adaptation of Ju-on: the Curse 1 & 2 – much less with English subtitles.

Some of you have forgotten that only three years ago you were perfectly capable of writing a text, writing an email, telling a bedtime story to a child, and it should worry you that powerful companies have convinced us we can’t do things we’ve been doing since the dawn of time.
