Wait! If Trump is Grendel (and so, presumably, JD Vance is Grendel's mother) who will play the part of Beowulf?

Question in Copenhagen: why is Trump focussed on a Russian threat that doesn't exist (in Greenland) as opposed to one where it does (Ukraine)?

Trump’s desire for Greenland is not for anything. Minerals, money, military control can all be had without its conquest. He just wants to own it. It’s a whim. He feels like it. He thinks it would be cool. That’s it.

I saw some people in the piazza talking in sign language. One was on the phone, holding it in one hand and signing with the other. Does this limit what can be said, or how it's said? Is there an equivalent of textspeak? (a shorthand, if you'll forgive the pun)

Sigh. For the hundredth time, we are not judging his character, we are judging his actions. The RS position would be fine if it was a gentlemen's club, who can have who it damn well pleases. But it positions itself as represnting British science and scientists. Now an embarrassment, to be frank.

Really weaksauce argument from Paul Nurse: "yes he's bad but other scientists have been bad too". Removing this kind of honour is the kind of sanction that actually land with and sting thin-skinned arseholes like Musk

My stepchildren's secondary school still has an account on X. I have just emailed them, saying that it is not appropriate for an educational institution to be part of that ecosystem.

Maybe you could do the same for other schools and institutions.

If you can't get to a local bookshop uk.bookshop.org are an alternative to amazon and they financially support local bookshops. I only found out about them why my local bookshop recommended them to me as an alternative to amazon.
Bookshop: Buy books online. Support local bookshops.
A better way to buy books online. Every purchase financially supports local independent bookshops.

An AI chatbot does not have PERSONHOOD. It has no agency. It cannot meaningfully apologise. It cannot speak on behalf of another. It cannot speak for itself; it has no self. Stop asking it for quotes for articles. Stop printing its quotes.

While Amazon is investing billions of dollars to expand AI, independent bookstores are hosting community events, personally recommending books to readers, and providing a space that is safe and welcoming during a time when we need them most.

Never underestimate the power of a local bookstore.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

Breaking News: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said he personally instructed the CDC to abandon its position that vaccines do not cause autism. The move underscores his determination to challenge scientific orthodoxy — in this case, that vaccines save lives — and bend the health department to his will.
