I once had the immense pleasure of hearing her speak at PSU. A tremendous force for good, may she rest in peace.
BREAKING

Dr. Jane Goodall has died. She was 91.

It is impossible to sum up the impact she has had on our world and on science in a social media post.

She lived a long and incredible life but I am devastated.

SCOOP/UPDATE — The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) instructed *all* federal agencies to send out the shutdown email with NO modifications permitted, a federal source confirmed. Leadership received these orders via email at 1:30pm ET and then reinforced on a 3pm intra-agency call.
BREAKING — Employees at multiple government agencies have received an email from their leadership with text clearly dictated by The White House regarding a potential government shutdown.

So far HHS, Interior, and Social Security have gotten this message, the text of which was shared with me:

This is so crazy and to see NSF among the list saddens me tremendously. Adherence to the Hatch Act is something that we are trained on and take seriously.
HHS, SSA and DOI employees have all gotten a highly partisan email blaming Democrats for impending shutdown. From a quickly eyeballing they all appear to be identical. So clearly they come from the White House.

I did follow this and it is a remarkable 15 pages.
Drop whatever you’re doing and read the last 15 pages of this 161-page opinion. I’m serious.

I have never seen so many public servants protest the mismanagement of a government. Trumpists will point to this as proof of the deep state, but the reality is that these are professionals who are desperately trying to get the public to understand how bad things are.

A big problem with US STEM is it has presented itself as "politics free", better than social science, & exceptional (thus separate), making it very easy for the rightwing to present STEM as not being important or valuable for people, elitist, & untrustworthy 1/2
A friend tells me that our local public radio station is interviewing UCLA scientists — only those in STEM — about the federal funding cut and says they’re mostly just saying that “you can’t tie the culture wars to science.”
