Canada of course changed their PM because the old one was unpopular….
Cabinet this morning discussed centre-left revivals in Australia, Norway and Canada as inspiration for Labour

There must “keep a relentless focus on the cost of living, show relentless delivery of change people can feel and bring relentless clarity to drawing the choice ahead”, the PM said

I mean they do lose when their polls go down. Belief and nerve aren't much use in winning elections if no one votes for you.
Keir Starmer has this morning urged Cabinet to keep its nerve amid grim opinion polling (today’s YouGov put Labour in third place behind Reform & Tories)

“Governments do not lose because polls go down. They lose when they lose belief or nerve. We will do neither,” he said

But it isn't what they've got. Sorry, but part of fixing the problem is not living in denial about it. We are not at a 'base level of competence and delivery'. This is a bumbling administration, which is part of why it has become the lightning rod for 14 years of frustration.

among other things, you can't just *give* the Nobel prize to someone else. that's not how it works
WH sources say Venezuela's opposition leader committed the "ultimate sin": She accepted the Nobel Peace prize.

“If she had turned it down and said, ‘I can’t accept it because it’s Donald Trump’s,’ she’d be the president of Venezuela today,” one said.

It really doesn't matter that much what we, the UK, say about Venezuela.

It does matter that we read the direction geopolitics is headed and act accordingly.

The post-WWII assumptions no longer hold.

When he said “no casualties” he meant no casualties that he cares about.
The New York Times has just confirmed that 40 civilians died in President Trump's invasion.

This is the aftermath in one area

Mixed day. On the one hand, Donald Trump has I would say quite resoundingly destroyed the remnants of the global international order, that were already pretty frayed after Ukraine and the Gaza war, but on the other we did all get to laugh at Ian Leslie so

He's literally set himself up as Ruler of Venezuela.

George Bush at least got a congressional resolution and an attempt at a UN resolution before invading and occupying Iraq.

Trump didn't even consult with the Gang of 8 in Congress and now declares himself the ruler. Sheesh.
Trump on Venezuela: "We're going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper, and judicious transition"

As re the bombing of Iran last year expect support from Republicans to rise immediately as the issue polarises.
Some polling:
Invading Venezuela - 19% approve, 60% disapprove
OK to go w/o Congressional approval - 11% yes, 74% no
👇
Invading Venezuela is a close second:
19% approve, 60% disapprove.

He’ll be put in court, convicted and then Trump will pardon him before he swans off to Russia.

The Rubio vs Vance factionalism within the Trump admin is one of the most important divides (despite their claims of friendship) and Rubio seems to be on top.

So fmr Honduran President Hernandez voluntarily surrendered, and was duly extradited, tried and convicted for drug trafficking, and Trump pardoned him 6w ago.

And this morning, Trump illegally attacks Venezuela and abducts its president and his wife purportedly to try them for drug trafficking.

Venezuela is about to become a peaceful pro-western liberal democracy - just like Iraq or Libya. But I guess all decadent ruling classes are like the Bourbons; they forget nothing and they learn nothing.

It’s exhausting and boring, but because the wilful misunderstanders will be out in force some of us are going to have to spend a lot of time saying:

No, we do not like or support Maduro.

We like and support the rule of law.
Maduro is a brutal and oppressive dictator of Venezuela.

Trump has no legitimate legal basis for military action against Venezuela under United States or international law.

Both of those facts are simultaneously true.
