Interesting conversation here - not just on the economics of Brexit, but also the politics of it, which many in the centre keep ignoring.
This week Keir Starmer biographer @tombaldwin66.bsky.social joins the herd and lays out why it's time for the centre-left to get over its timidity on Brexit and offer something to a huge portion of Labour's vote currently looking elsewhere. It’s a big conversation. open.substack.com/pub/nocows/p...

“Renee Nicole Good calmly said everything was “fine” and “I’m not mad at you” seconds before an on-duty Immigration Customs Enforcement agent fatally shot her in Minneapolis as she drove away, according to a cellphone video shared on Friday by Donald Trump’s White House.”

Make her the President, America.
Rep. @AOC: I understand that Vance believes shooting a young mother of three in the face three times is an acceptable America that he wants to live in, and I do not. That is a fundamental difference between Vance and I. I do not believe that the American people should be assassinated in the street.

Right, it’s like saying “we need to win over people by writing letters to a newspaper whose editor has made it clear to us they will never be published”. Just a failure to understand the context they are in.

There is only one fraud ring that matters in the United States, and it's run out of the White House
JD Vance: "I believe we're gonna have some very big announcements in the next couple of days. I don't want to get ahead of the president, but we believe there is a nationwide fraud ring that's rooted in illegal aliens and others taking advantage of the American welfare system."

Emily Heller, an eyewitness, is speaking out to set the record straight. Officers were screaming at Renee Nicole Good, “Move, move, move.”

So she moved, and they shot her multiple times? Then Noem and Trump branded her a domestic terrorist. Does everyone see how absolutely insane that sounds?

And yet, the President of the United States does so, easily and freely.
Authoritarian lying about violent, murderous suppression of citizens is much more difficult in the age of the smartphone - especially in a country like America where government cannot, yet, turn off the internet.

This is why the video matters. Because we can't trust the administration or the press to make it clear that ICE is comfortable shooting people on the street just because. That guy didn't hesitate one bit. Just killed that woman.
Homeland Security’s description of what happened and the narrative they’re pushing clearly doesn’t match up with the videos we’re all seeing.

They’re asking people not to believe what we can all see with our own eyes.

I’ve been in contact with DHS demanding more information.
January 7, 2026 at 9:26 PM
And that’s why they’re claiming this person was trying to run over officers. The truth is obvious to anyone with eyes however but unfortunately a lot of people will decide to believe the lies. Horrific. So so so horrific.
Law enforcement officers CANNOT use deadly force against a fleeing person fleeing unless they have a reasonable belief that the individual poses a danger to others (e.g., they know the person is armed). If in vehicle, the person must be threatening to use deadly force with the vehicle or other means

Like those before it, that insane, vile DHS statement about the Minneapolis shooting isn't about covering anything up. It's performative lying.

They aren't trying to persuade anyone that their agents did nothing wrong. They're trying to project that their agents can get away with anything.
January 7, 2026 at 9:47 PM
My god is that post from Trump dark. The ICE agent clearly wasn’t run over. The woman obviously wasn’t shot in self defence. They put a bullet through her head.

Canada of course changed their PM because the old one was unpopular….
Cabinet this morning discussed centre-left revivals in Australia, Norway and Canada as inspiration for Labour

There must “keep a relentless focus on the cost of living, show relentless delivery of change people can feel and bring relentless clarity to drawing the choice ahead”, the PM said

I mean they do lose when their polls go down. Belief and nerve aren't much use in winning elections if no one votes for you.
Keir Starmer has this morning urged Cabinet to keep its nerve amid grim opinion polling (today’s YouGov put Labour in third place behind Reform & Tories)

“Governments do not lose because polls go down. They lose when they lose belief or nerve. We will do neither,” he said

But it isn't what they've got. Sorry, but part of fixing the problem is not living in denial about it. We are not at a 'base level of competence and delivery'. This is a bumbling administration, which is part of why it has become the lightning rod for 14 years of frustration.

“If she had turned it down and said, ‘I can’t accept it because it’s Donald Trump’s,’ she’d be the president of Venezuela today,” one said.

It really doesn't matter that much what we, the UK, say about Venezuela.

It does matter that we read the direction geopolitics is headed and act accordingly.

The post-WWII assumptions no longer hold.
