in a refreshing change of pace, both bandcamp and games workshop announced this week that they've banned AI to varying extents. these stances are crucial during a time when AI is being rammed down our throats at every turn, and some people are starting to accept it
Bandcamp’s stance is a crucial one as the popularity of AI-generated music, regrettably, explodes. Take, for example, neo-soul artist Sienna Rose, who has three songs in the Spotify top 50 despite not existing. “She,” unfortunately, is just the tip of the iceberg. This does not mean AI has reached a standard of quality such that it’s an acceptable substitute for art made by people with hopes, dreams, and, well, souls; rather, decades of paint-by-numbers pop formulated by the same nine producers and the hyper-commercialization of music by services like Spotify – turning artists’ blood, sweat, and tears into disposable background noise – have primed people to accept watered-down, machine-made gruel. It’s not unlike the way SEO and algorithms turned numerous websites into barely sentient content mills before AI swooped in and finished the job. The powers that be have been trying to build this world for decades. AI was just the missing puzzle piece. All we can do now is support the people and organizations that prioritize authentic human ingenuity while doing the slow, hard work of constructing something, anything, better than the modern internet – preferably somewhere else.

As volunteer, can personally vouch for this. We have a lot of knowledge in the Depot and anything given goes toward efficiently getting bulk supplies and food into the hands that need it. We are volunteer- and donation-run. There's no CEO, no advertising dollars. Just people helping people.

We are in fact DESPERATE for winter coats, waterproof gloves, and good boots. We get so many wonderful donations but it is so cold and the numbers of unhoused unsheltered people are going up at the absolute worst time for it, and we run out of coats weekly.

A tone deaf decision that rewards and normalizes exploitative GenAi against artists in their own spaces!

This isn't just a casual observation. Fascism scholars have long made this point. It's why calling them "weird" was a more effective strategy than talking about the prices of eggs. Fascism is an aesthetic political movement - you need to make people feel embarassed and horrified by it.

It occurs to me all the yelling at ICE in MPLS isn't merely funny. Getting made fun of like this is awful for morale. ICE is losing field officers faster than it can wave them through training, and a big part of it is how little of this these little weasels can take.
