Author of the definitive biography of R.E.M., Maps and Legends, 3rd printing available now on eBay and Amazon: https://a.co/d/cCGWPQO I know the civilian name of every member of the Legion of Super-Heroes.
Like most interview subjects, Mitch Easter & Don Dixon have a store of well-worn anecdotes they dip into over and over again, but Mark Caro got them to open up and divulge a lot of fresh insights into the recording of Chronic Town & Murmur. Recommended for all R.E.M. fans. youtu.be/9YkxWtjK3og?...

I miss the achingly sincere English teacher who tried to turn us on to Dylan or Simon & Garfunkel as if any of us cared a whit about Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot fighting in the captain's tower and see it's just like real poetry kids
I miss school in the late ‘70s when the English teacher smugly asserted that Bob Dylan lyrics were bad poetry, expecting the heated reaction he’d gotten years before but no one cared
I miss school in the 70s when you had to pick a future spouse on Valentine’s Day or the teacher would assign you one in front of the class

Absolute Batman gets all the hype, but what Matt Fraction and Jorge Jiménez are doing with the mainline book is better in every way

If Kewan Lacy doesn’t lose that fumble for a Georgia defensive touchdown, this game isn’t particularly close. Ole Miss was the better team. Kirby pulled out the fake punt because he knew he was in trouble.

the officials did everything in their power to give Georgia that game, but it wasn’t enough

So I know my followers have been wondering, “John, what do you think about the new One-Step reissue of Chronic Town & Murmur?” And my answer would be that this is the best both records have ever sounded, although the improvement to Murmur is subtle, while the upgrade to Chronic Town is breathtaking.

I could easily fill this review by talking about the various resumés of the members of supergroup Drink the Sea, but that wouldn’t do justice to what I’ve just witnessed at the Wedge.

Hot take: the first version of Freewheelin' with the four cut songs is better than what finally got released. Rocks and Gravel makes the electric turn of Highway 61 seem a lot less surprising, and Let Me Die in My Footsteps is Bob's best folkie protest song, hands down.
