There’s a solid majority of voters who loathe Reform, Farage, and their Trumpist vision for the UK. All the other parties need to do is not implode and/or alienate the people they need to vote tactically to keep out the populist right. And yet, here we are…

It really embodies the very specific ways that some people in politics are a) bad at their jobs and b) too online that you can be supportive of 'the Labour government 2024 to 2026, and McSweeney's role in it' and use these words *at all*, not least in many ways: that's what they're doing!
If you are using the phrase "full speed ahead to uber-woke, net-zeroist, rejoinerism", especially if you are of the left, a loved one should take your phone off you and send you to Baden-Baden or somewhere for a month.
Yes, god help we risk a floundering government that feels like no one is in charge.

This is the key point that is lost in so much Westminster bubble talk on net zero. It is popular. It’s hugely popular with Labour’s base and with the progressive voters it needs to vote tactically to defeat Reform. And it’s even popular with Tories who Labour needs not to switch to Reform.
…as well as being supported by the vast majority of Lab/Lib/Gn voters, almost all Labour MPs, a 2-1 majority of voters overall and – even now – a healthy majority of Con voters

Going to reconcile myself to the fact that the “cost of net zero” debate will always be annoying.

Mainly because:
a) net zero isn’t a discrete spending line (e.g., you mainly buy an EV for the car bit);
b) you need a counterfactual (what would it cost if we don’t do net zero?) and that’s hard

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Most people don't realize the truly staggering rate of improvement of renewable technologies - the pace has been *insane* and costs have fallen through the floor.
Ireland has dismantled its first commercial wind farm to make way for a step-change in scale. Each new turbine generates more power than the entire 1992 Bellacorick site, illustrating how 3 decades of innovation have compressed land use while multiplying output. buff.ly/goiabIO

if you want to understand the misinformation about Net Zero estimates this is a great starting point
🧵A political/media guide to the "truth" about net-zero

1) Add up costs to install & run a net-zero energy system
2) Pretend fossil-fuelled alternatives wld be free
3) Do say "eco zealots are bankrupting us"
4) Don't say "free cars if we scrap net-zero" cos it sounds ridiculous
5) That's it!
