Sending extra love and warmth to homeless street outreach workers + mutual aid folks busting their butts to make sure folks stay safe ahead of the snow.

Nobody should live or die outside in the richest country in the world.

We need housing, not handcuffs.

Remember all of the SAMHSA grants on mental health and substance abuse that RFK Jr. canceled yesterday?

Funding is restored.
24 hours of chaos as mental health grants are slashed then restored
For 24 hours, it was unclear which mental health and addiction programs would survive and who would still have jobs when the dust settled.

to reiterate

*doctors do not take the Hippocratic Oath

*the Hippocratic Oath contains enduring ideas as well as some weird-ass nothing-to-do-with-modern-medicine ideas

*”do no harm” in popular usage is a simplistic and naive idea which obscures both the risk and benefit of medical intervention

I can’t explain why this is such a Sacramento story but it is, in every respect. From its particular kind of sad sweetness to its particular kind of quiet trauma and despair. This is an absolutely beautiful episode podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/h...

1. This is awful for trans kids and for everyone who cares about them. Others here speak to that eloquently, including Rep. McBride’s statement today.

2. This is also independently bad for doctors, who don’t seem to be noticing the way this administration is demonizing our profession specifically.
Just now, a national trans healthcare felony ban for youth has passed the US House, with 10 year prison terms.

3 Dems crossed party lines to vote to jail providers.

4 GOP crossed party lines to vote against.

It is not expected to pass the Senate, where Dems hold filibuster power.

Story to come.

I demand a font czar: the nation should have elegantly designed fonts for all to use—let’s not debase ourselves by fighting over which retired Windows default font we like better. Even if you’re going to be this basic with default fonts, the new one, Aptos, is better than either.
Marco Rubio ordered diplomats to return to using Times New Roman font in official communications, calling his predecessor's decision to adopt Calibri a “wasteful” diversity move

The secretary of state called it a "wasteful" diversity move, according to an internal department cable seen by Reuters.

I think Zohran is great. I also predict that he will reinstate sweeps by some other name, soon. I’d be happy to lose that bet. But sweeps are never for getting people housed. Sweeps are to ensure people don’t lay claim to a single piece of land long enough to establish informal tenancy rights. 🧵
NEW: Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani said Thursday he will not continue sweeps of homeless encampments — which city data shows have not yielded any permanent or supportive-housing referrals in more than a year.

I’ve always been struck by Strayhorn’s version of this song where he seems to rush through its melancholy to make it off-handed, lighten it up. It’s not the best version of his song! The Hajdu biography (also in the thread) tells you he wrote this as a kid—older now, he doesn’t want to wallow in it

The Strand is truly a treasure of Dorchester and of Greater Boston; many fond times there with Jose Mateo’s Nutcracker (check it out! cheap way to see the ballet!) and the Boston Children’s Chorus among others
K-Pop, indie operas, Punjabi dance-offs, and the Jose Mateo Nutcracker's up next starting 12/6...

It's great to see the Strand Theatre — Boston's only city-owned theatre venue — being so well-used these days.
The Strand Theatre is a busy spot lately!

Last weekend, the Dorchester theatre packed in more than 1,300 people for the Boston Bhangra Competition, one of North America’s largest Punjabi dance-offs.
