Little Willie John may well have been the most famous person to have died in the confines of Washington's Walla Walla State Penitentiary (in 1968). Today would have been his 88th birthday.

Hits included “Fever” & “All Around the World.”
Younger brother of singer Mabel John.

Little Willie John was born in Camden, Arkansas on November 15, 1937 and raised in Detroit. He began performing and recording with the Paul Williams Orchestra ("The Hucklebuck" on the Savoy label). Willie also toured as a vocalist with the Duke Ellington and Count Basie bands. His first solo record was
"Mommy What Happened To The Christmas Tree?" on the Prize label. In 1955, when he was seventeen, he joined King Records and recorded a cover version of "All Around The World" which had been out by Titus Turner. It was his first hit and sold 300,000 copies.
The following year, 1956, he had his first pop crossover hit with "Fever". Two years later Peggy Lee redid it and it became an even bigger pop hit for her.
Little Willie John died of "natural causes" on May 26th, 1968 at the Washington State Penitentiary. He had been imprisoned for two year for manslaughter in the stabbing of a railroad employee, Kendall Roundtree, during a brawl in a Seattle cafe. He was thirty years old.

Gillis is in fine form tonight. That said, the view of the murky brown dreckwater rushing through Ballona Creek that I had off the Inglewood Avenue bridge this afternoon will disabuse me of any thought of going in.

Rain pelts the Gillis jetty in Playa del Rey, Los Angeles, as a half dozen surfers wait for a set to roll in. (Zoom in off the jetty, you'll see the black dots in the water.
