This is not to excuse the Dems who crossed on that vote! That’s a bad vote! It’s just to say it did not actually determine the outcome, even though the numbers look that way.

Rare to see discusson of the point @jamellebouie.net makes here. "Most coverage of Trump treats him as president in a functional way, even if he doesn’t perform the civic duties of the office." www.nytimes.com/2026/01/21/o...

#Mets have a stud starter and a pretty good toss-in.

Impressive off-season, even if losing Diaz was dubious.

Alonso was not coming back. Let's just grant that as a given.

Roe v. Wade & reproductive justice are fundamental issues.

We are overwhelmed by other things, but we should not forget about that. On the anniversary of the decision, let's spend a bit of time thinking about that subject, at least.

I doubt the dissent in CU would have made matters worse especially if #SCOTUS did what the dissenters were willing to accept and gave the challengers a narrow win.
My contribution to the Institute for Free Speech symposium on 50th anniversary of Buckley v. Valeo explains why Buckley is not what ails American democracy, and that contrary decisions there and in Citizens United would have made things worse: www.ifs.org/blog/buckley...
Buckley v. Valeo is Not What Ails American Democracy - Institute For Free Speech
Those who blame Buckley for our current problems are wrong to do so. A contrary decision would have made things worse.

I'm out of the loop. I don't even know the name of many of these #AcademyAward nominations.

Jack Smith: "President Trump was charged because the evidence established that he willfully broke the very laws that he took an oath to uphold. Grand juries in two separate districts reached this conclusion based on his actions, as alleged in the indictments they returned."

When C-SPAN covered Roe v. Wade in its "Landmark Cases" series, a familiar face (at least for fans of the Strict Scrutiny Podcast) was on hand. #SCOTUS

Today is the 53rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade. #SCOTUS

I still can't totally believe the justices had the f-ing nerve to overturn it and in such a shoddy fashion.

It is as if we are a country forgotten about. And how Republicans, even so-called pro-choice ones like Susan Collins, helped.

"Easy Living" is the name of two different #classicfilms, one a comedy, one a drama (Lucille Ball has a supporting role in the drama; she was in many serious films & quite good in them).

The first is a Jean Arthur screwball comedy, and the second stars Victor Mature (his real name). Both are good.

An eight year old relative got a "genius" IQ score & I'm not surprised. Kid is a brain. But we really shouldn't be giving IQ tests to eight year olds.

The justices keep returning to the hypo of a Fed governor posting pro-Nazi videos to ask whether that would meet the bar for for-cause removal. The idea that this kind of content would obviously cross the line seems a bit farcical given some of the material that DHS regularly posts on social media

impeachment? Is that a thing outside a few judges? #SCOTUS

He annoys me. Even when I support him, he comes off as a jerk. #SCOTUS
Hard to read Gorsuch. He seemed to be mocking the idea of a hearing for Cook, but also didn't love the idea of total judicial unreviewability for fired Fed governors. I think this case annoys him.

Lisa Cook allows #SCOTUS conservatives to look principled. A prime "got to hand it to them" possibility.
January 21, 2026 at 3:57 PM
who will play Lisa Cook in the future classic SNL skit? #SCOTUS
I also think Kavanaugh empathizes with Lisa Cook because he feels he was the target of a search-and-destroy political hatchet job. He even quoted his own confirmation hearing screed: "What goes around comes around." That was surely intentional.

During yesterday's argument in the 2nd Amendment case, the Deputy SG Harris led by claiming that Hawaii was using property as a pretext for regulating firearms. Today, I'm guessing that SG Sauer will claim that pretext is irrelevant.

Important question from the Chief and now Justice Kagan in the Cook argument — what is the point of the for cause requirement for removal if reinstatement is off the table as a remedy?
