I'm deeply saddened to share that Donald Shoup passed away last night. He was the ideal academic—curious, methodical, and concerned with turning ideas into real-world change. TAing his parking course these past few years has one of the greatest honors of my life. Rest in peace, Shoup Dogg.

embeds bring fragments of a cited work into the citing article, so when we are reading it on the web (its 2025) the content is available in place, with appropriate attribution.

with some further UX tweaks this could be the basis for citations++ on the web!
Want to see a quick demo of the technology that might replace citations in scientific papers?

Goodbye citations, hello embeds.

I was just hoping for links in scientific papers, but this is even better!
The future of academic citations: Embeds
Citations are dead. Long live embeds! In the future, you won't use traditional citations in scientific articles. You'll directly embed the snippet of science...

The bsky app is open source. We need the option to view the feed in different ways. It doesn't have to look like Twitter. There should be an option to filter by type (show only videos) and an option select the algorithm for the feed. (For example, Monolith is the basis of the tiktok fyp algorithm.)

Love the extra color around the vehicle cost in their Congestion Pricing data here. I took an Express bus to Queens from Midtown for the first time post CP and could not believe how much smoother (not just faster) the traffic was on 6th Ave, 57th St, and the approach to the Queensboro Bridge.

The story behind ProPublica’s new Private School Demographics database began with our need to understand how many “segregation academies” still operate — and where.

when you have anti-DEI proponents openly going after black military officers for recruiting from HBCUs and suing schools for their black and Hispanic enrollment *even after the schools ended any racial preferences* then the only honest label for these people is "segregationist"
I genuinely think we should start calling businesses and schools falling to the anti-DEI movement “segregationists” because they are re-segregating. And earlier rounds of segregationists *also* explained their preferred policy in race-neutral terms (“state’s rights” and “freedom of association”).

Looking for an ultrasonic cleaner for cleaning alcohol-preserved specimens (e.g. spiders). Norm Platnick had an excellent one on his desk, very small (about the size of a Campbell soup can, the ‘basin’ at the top less than half that size). Would appreciate any recommendations.

Riding into Controversy: Who Really Being Attacked from Ebike Regulations?
Vickie Paladino is supporting new legislation that hurts Queens residents because she claims “migrant gangs” are using ebikes to commit crimes. Although this crime conspiracy theory has no connection to reality, bill 606 is unfortunately very real, and you don't have to be a racist who hate kids biking who are supporting this poorly written legislation. Luckily you can submit your thoughts to the City Council directly by emailing it to…

I had a project in DC many moons ago where we surveyed riders. Low income people were willing to pay double the price if it meant improving the frequency.
New transit study: Service frequency and coverage both drive ridership, but frequency matters more.

Broadway Vision update: This week DDC & DOT unveiled plans to upgrade blocks 38-40 with a capital build out in permanent materials: trees and greenery, two-way bike path, public seating, plaza space, and more. This is just 1 piece of work that is in development for the corridor.

Breaks my heart to see $10bn in transit funding to…rebuild one bus terminal. This is regional rail-level money, the kind of money that should dramatically improve commutes, not cement shitty ones in place. And here's a Council graphic showing how parking mandates won't apply to some housing types most affected by them.
