I've started a newsletter 😱

The first edition sets up how I aim to discuss new perspectives on how to rethink our relationships to both tech and nature.

We @connectedbydata.org are planning a conference next year (early March, in Manchester) about people, power and participation in (public sector) data and AI.

If you were coming, who would you really like to hear from as a keynote speaker to kick off the day?

Working in academia = burn out
Working in nonprofit = burn out
Working in industry = burn out
Being self-employed = burn out

It's almost as if we live in system that only cares about what it can extract from us.

What's 'social' about such media?

It's just another content slop farm. Tech CEOs seem to have forgotten what made people join social media platforms in the first place. Human connection and "I wanna see what everyone else" is up to.

The platform appears to closely resemble TikTok and is powered by Sora 2, OpenAI's latest video generation model.

AI image generation has made stock images kind of classy. When I see images on a blog or linkedin post now and it's a stock image I think:"Wow, you invested some time looking for an image that suits your content, and didn’t just generate a weird looking yellow stained image with misspelled words."

I used to read across UK, French and German newspapers every morning. But I've stopped reading and listening to German media for more than a year now. The reporting was just too scewed, racist, misinformed and upsetting. Great summary of my 'home countries' rotten media landscape.

I love to go to Chat GPT 5 with its alleged “PhD level expertise” and an ask it about my MA thesis work and see that it really cannot do that level of academic work whatever. It can do a SIMULACRUM of that work, which might fool you if you did not have any expertise.

it does remain enraging that we had a perfectly decent social media platform - not without its faults! but is anything? - which helped sustain the careers of tons of creatives and one guy, LITERALLY THIS ONE GUY, decided to ruin it for all of us

I'm seeing a lot of "not only, but" sentences in reports lately. Often repetitively in every bloody paragraph.

Is this the new AI em dash? What's going on?

On X, Masaki Nobushiro posts a recurring (and useful) drawing about how people wrongly think a 1m tsunami is a cresting wave when it's actually a wall of water filled with dangerous and deadly debris that's strong enough to sweep up a car.

OpenAI's move to allow generating "Ghibly stlye" images isn't just a cute PR stunt. It is an expression of dominance and the will to reject and refuse democratic values. It is a vulgar display of power.

But it’s Palestinians being murdered, so it’s a foot note.
