I would argue that the case for dismantling ICE has, at this point, virtually nothing to do with larger questions of immigration enforcement and reform, it's just clearly incompatible with a free and democratic society to maintain a secret police force with sweeping and arbitrary authority.
Senator Gallego weighs in as well. Note that at the start of 2025 he was considered a *moderate* on immigration and co-sponsored the Laken Riley Act. Him and many other Dems have been increasingly horrified at what ICE is doing and shifted away from a "more enforcement" focus.

Every Stephen Miller tantrum and DHS recruitment ad speaks in these existential terms about "defending your culture" to elide the fact that they need people with the courage to wear a mask while interrogating a sixth grader

There are half a dozen things about this that should each trigger an immediate international response as well as the 25th Amendment
Trump also just posted an image of his meeting with European leaders from August, but edited to feature a map of North America covered in the US flag -- including Canada

Conservatives are happy to exploit systems like the pandemic PPP (literally saying things like "Why didn't you stop me then") so they assume everyone else is doing worse fraud.
Let's review the facts at hand here: A Democratic administration discovered and prosecuted a case of welfare fraud. Republicans are now using this case to smear hundreds of thousands of immigrants and militarize an entire city.

And your conclusion is that Democrats need to do something different?

what the hell is this revisionist nonsense? This *did not happen*—except in the minds of the far-right. You're buying their bad faith bullshit. MAGA called for and now is building a white ethnostate b/c *they are white nationalists*. That's what they do. FFS

Abolishing ICE is the moderate position because they deserve so much worse.
BREAKING: James Rodden, an ICE prosecutor who the Observer identified last year as the operator of an X account that posted “America is a White nation," “‘Migrants’ are all criminals,” and apparent praise of Adolf Hitler, appeared to be back at work Tuesday.

Is it good when the president yells "fuck you" and flips random people off?
Trump is seen flipping off Ford worker who appears to yell "pedophile protector" as he walks by

Is this the most anti-American thing a president has said?
Q: "Do you believe that deadly force was necessary?"

Trump: "It was highly disrespectful of law enforcement. The woman and her friend were highly disrespectful of law enforcement…Law enforcement should not be in a position where they have to put up with this stuff."

The right can't even be bothered to listen to the argument. No idea what's going on but they're MAD AS HELL about it.
it is very funny how people like this inherently don’t understand any protest that ever happens in the united states. what exactly should americans be protesting here

If you feel that dickish energy to gatekeep, reframe it.

You have the unique opportunity to teach someone how to effectively protest.
It's actually a good thing that previously apolitical normies are finally getting angry and starting to speak out. We need the numbers in the streets and at the polls.

If your response to them is "no, fuck you, too late," then you don't actually care about stopping Trump. You're just preening.

The right will never have agency, and the left must always accommodate them because the right is Real America. It's always been the same story.
The reactionary centrist logic is simple: if the left does something bad it’s the left’s fault, and if the right does something bad, it’s also the left’s fault for making them do it. It’s a simple formula and once you see it every one of their arguments is the same

The agents are just being economical. There's more chance of collateral damage if they kill the driver of a moving vehicle.
Great piece by my Cato colleague. “Since July, immigration agents have shot at least six people behind the wheel of a vehicle. The same playbook is used each time: the agent says they “feared for their life” as a vehicle was “weaponized” against them. Juries should decide, but we tie their hands.
Opinion | Renee Good wasn’t the first person shot in her car by ICE. The justification followed a familiar script.
Mike Fox: The officer who shot and killed a woman in Minneapolis might never have to defend his actions before a judge or jury.
