Amazon Web Services hosts massive surveillance systems for both ICE and DHS.

Citizens Bank provides nearly $1 trillion in credit & bonds to private prison companies.

AT&T has a $147 million contract to provide communications services to DHS.

Know who is profiting from ICE’s cruelty.

Great article @michaelschneider.com. How about a follow up on the liabilities the city incurs by not maintaining streets and sidewalks? Can't the city be sued for crashes, pedestrian injuries, car damage, ADA non-compliance, etc.? www.latimes.com/opinion/stor...
Contributor: You're not imagining it. L.A. has surrendered to the potholes
To avoid a legal obligation to make sidewalks accessible, the city stopped repaving streets in July and doesn't plan to resume.

Another example of our tendency to underestimate the adverse impacts of air pollution. The more we know, the more we understand about the need to reduce and eliminate all forms of air pollution, including wildfires.

Interesting data on the benefits of congestion pricing. Wish California transportation officials had the courage to give it a try. Let's see. Where to start? How about the places with the worst congestion? Shouldn't be too hard to find in California. @streetsblogca.bsky.social
Year 1 data on congestion pricing in Manhattan…

* Vehicle traffic: -11%
* Foot traffic: +3.4%
* Storefront vacancy: -0.9%
* Pollution: -22%
* Revenue for mass transit: $548M

So YES this has been a huge success.

Deaths on CA roads (~4,500) outnumber the homicides (1,666 in 2024). Deaths from breathing polluted air = about 5,000 per year according to @airresources.bsky.social. Maybe put more effort into reducing transportation-related and air pollution deaths, no? data-openjustice.doj.ca.gov/sites/defaul...

How about the idea of taxing vehicle weight and using the money to build protected bike lanes and safe routes for pedestrians?
Just discovered this NBER paper examining the safety dangers of car bloat:

"Being hit by a vehicle that is 1,000 pounds heavier results in a 47% increase in the baseline fatality probability."
