Had some really cool things I got to work on since the end of May up to now, but my contracts are wrapping up this week, which means I'm jobless again! I'd love a full time W-2 job with benefits, but I think those don't exist? Anyway, my portfolio is here: jjsignal.com

Were 90s kids clamoring for a Batman cartoon with 1930s Art Deco aesthetics? Is that what the market demanded? Or did some really smart creative people have a vision and make a genre-defining hit that sustained 20 years of TV shows? If you want success look for vision, not just metrics.

A goodbye to Stewart Cheifet, who hosted Computer Chronicles and Net Cafe, two critical computer news programs through the 80s and 90s. His entire collection was handed to the Internet Archive a couple years back. They are being re-digitized where needed.

Rest in peace, Stewart Cheifet. Computer Chronicles was the coolest, and I still love watching it. I reconnected with it in the early 2000s when a group chat was really getting into Johnny Turbo and linked an episode with the real life Johnny Turbo in it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3Rj...

I felt like a dunce when I finally used it for the art in NEURODIVER. Beforehand I was just using Photoshop for my pixel art with the original ROM. Everything was easier. Everything. If you want to get into pixel art, or want an easier time with it, use Aseprite. You'll never regret the purchase.
ATTENTION ARTISTS AND ANY ASPIRING PIXEL ARTISTS!!!

Aseprite is on sale on Steam!! It's a Pixel art program for art/animating and I highly recommend! (I have almost 700 hours in it!) It's $13 and a one time payment for an excellent program!!

I watched Take Me Out To Snowland (私をスキーに連れてって), a movie I've had on my mind for over a decade since I watched its opening sequence. I'm pleased to say that it's just as confidently stylish and beautiful as its opening all the way through. An incredible winter movie.

Mostly emulation, especially with PC-8801 and 9801 emulation. I use Textractor often to get machine translation in while playing them, and I don't think that works very well on Linux iirc. Please correct me if I'm wrong, because if I am, then maybe I will just go to Linux.
What are the specific pain points that prevent you from switching to Linux or have forced you back to Windows? Trying to collect as many as possible. Specific productivity software, etc.
Living with Windows has always been a calculus of how useful it is professionally vs. the amount of unbearable shit you gotta disable with a script and I think we reached a tipping point where it’s majority unbearable shit.

As we enter the New Year remember fear of making bad art is holding you back. Fear of people not liking your work is holding you back. Rejection is holding you back

You'll make bad art, you'll have people not like your work, and you'll be rejected. Moving past it is half the job of being a creative

It was my favorite thing to do with Read Only Memories and NEURODIVER next to animating portrait emotions.
One of the most underrated design skills in games is graphic design for things like decals and fake branding for posters/stickers/flyers/books/props/signs/displays.

We take this stuff for granted and yet they are very much a world building detail that adds so much more life to environments.

I *LOVE* how much reactivity Popful Mail packs into these generic raccoon guys! They raise their shields if approached head-on. They comically look around if Mail leaps overhead, wondering where she's gone. They recover and initiate attacks. They're vulnerable while confused. They're PERFECT

Palmer, Elon, Altman, etc, they're all the same person to varying degrees. One thing that they very flatly have in common with each other is their extremely superficial reading of art, media, and culture. They are the "Cool Robot" joke because all it is to them is capital. It's just social currency.

I say this with zero irony: if you are even tangentially a part of a retro video game community, it is your civic duty to push back against this company and shun anyone who doesn't. This is fascism tapping gently at the door and as soon as you let it in, it's going to invite its friends.

My copy of Red Bull's game culture magazine, GAMEPOP, came in today. I got to do some work in an article for it and learn who Ludwig Ahgren was. The story and pitch sounded fun so I jumped right in. The magazine as a whole turned out great! Wonderful to flip through, fun to work on!
