Melrose was supposed to undergo a complete streets makeover from Highland to Fairfax that would have installed stormwater gardens to mitigate flooding, among other critical safety improvements. The previous councilmember killed the project

New from me, at @vqr.bsky.social: a few years ago two people contacted me about a TEDx talk I once gave, “The Art of Haunting.”

When I replied I’d never given a TEDx talk, things just got weirder.

On AI, ghosts, what it means to tell a story, and what Italo Calvino saw coming 60 years ago. Enjoy!
The Art of Haunting
The email was innocuous enough. A woman wrote to me explaining how her partner had been talking about my work and how much he’d enjoyed it—in particular, he’d remembered me giving a TEDx talk about gh...

There isn't 2025 data here yet, but notice that almost 4,000 ADUs were permitted in 2024, which probably became available in 2025! I hope the reactionary San Diego city gov rollback on ADU policy didn't cut too much into that in 2025. www.hcd.ca.gov/housing-open...

Listen to Senator Wyden.

I wish more of his colleagues would do so.
When I wrote Section 230 I did so knowing it would be critical for protecting free speech online. 30 years later and it’s one of the last things standing in the way of Republican censorship of the internet. Here’s to many more years of defending this vital safeguard of free speech.

Never mind the jobs you had, tell me five classes you took in college
(chronological order as it kinda tells a story):

1) Virtual Geographies
2) Third Year Portuguese
3) History of the Brazilian Left 1900-Present
4) Neoliberalism/Its Discontents
5) Computational and Structural Estimation Methods
Never mind the jobs you had, tell me five classes you took in college:
1) a history of modern terrorism (useful for the fascist ICE era)
2) intro to Buddhism (taught by Uma Thurman’s dad!)
3) Italian opera
4) Leadership and community organizing (perennially useful)
5) Arabic
Never mind the jobs you had, tell me five classes you took in college:

1. Creative Writing - Poetry
2. Modern Art
3. Shakespeare
4. Contemporary Fiction
5. Topics in Religious Studies

The Alt National Park Service (@altnps) grift account with almost 900k followers that LARPs like QAnon is now pretending they know the identity of Alex Pretti's killer for clicks
Completely insane. AltNPS claimed to know the name of Alex Pretti's killer, refused to say it because "the truth always comes out," and then just deleted the post.

A man was executed on the street in my hometown, and AltNPS is using that as an excuse to vaguepost for attention.

Damn, who could have guessed a bunch of Democrats teaming up with a fascist political party to censor the violence in Gaza by forcing a popular social media platform to sell to a coalition of fascist billionaires would also end up also censoring fascist violence here. Do you think anyone told them?
This morning, I recorded a video on TikTok about why DHS’s arguments for the power to enter homes without judicial warrants in immigration cases are bunk.

Nine hours later, TikTok still says my video is “under review,” and can’t be shared.

Well, here’s a link:

And it's not like the Oklahoma thing is new. They keep ramping up cooperation with ICE and now since late 2025 they are all ICE certified or whatever www.news9.com/oklahoma-cit...
