The best solution to someone without a house is to house them. In the meanwhile: give them shelter! It reduces crime and ER visits, but you need to give people homes to keep them out of homelessness #urbanism #losangeles #housing www.nber.org/system/files...

A good counterpoint to some of my AI doomerism
An anecdote about why LLMs matter for open source software developers:

I maintain the tigris R package, which makes it easy to get geographic datasets from the US Census Bureau.

In April, an issue on the Census website started blocking download requests via tigris.

I'm not too into the "trump is fat and ugly lol" messaging at these things, but I really appreciated the commitment of the guy at the downtown Los Angeles protest who has a Trump...uh.... body type and was wearing only underwear and a Trump mask

Justin Wolfers has some good takes on things in his wheelhouse, but like many people in my field (economics), he's happy to pundit outside his lane uncritically. Three counterpoints in the quote post below

UPDATE: Newsom has signed SB 79 into law!!

This is a great day for anyone who cares about ending California's housing and homelessness crisis, getting the state to net zero emissions, and recovering American democracy.
If you live in California, please call @gavinnewsom.bsky.social at (916) 445-2841 and urge him to sign SB 79. Here's my post about why the bill is so important: publiccomment.blog/p/newsom-s-f...

All-time (but not living): Townes Van Zandt

Otherwise these three

Erika de Casier: best pop songwriter, at least. Great albums/ helped write that great New Jeans EP.

Gillian Welch: especially Time: The Revelator

Phil Elvrum: most heartbreaking and I love his microphones writing 🎧
I also need to know: I am fairly middle-of-the-road on Taylor Swift but someone I know called her the Greatest Living Lyricist. She is not.

Who is yours? Either the greatest or your favorite?

We need a new follow tracker labeler I guess. Knowing who was following sus journalists and pols is a helpful way of filtering through the noise of a million randos. Like I understand why non-maga might follow J.D. Vance, but it is still useful context when trying to parse the chaos of social media.

"I prefer the hands-on touch you only get with hired goons"
“The source told CBS News that [Kash Patel and Dan Bongino] asked for "large, beefy" agents to conduct an arrest of Comey "in full kit," including Kevlar vests and exterior wear emblazoned with the FBI logo.” The leadership of the FBI is now in the hands of infantile psychopaths.
The FBI is weighing an arrest and perp walk for Comey — and suspended an agent for refusing to help, sources say
The FBI is considering carrying out a "showy" arrest and perp walk of the agency's now-indicted ex-Director James Comey, sources tell CBS News.

The main answer? Wages and income did not keep up with inflation. The second order answer? Covid era stimulus policies continued to expire under Biden due to conservative dems in the Senate. (The 2021 peak in real disposable income was supported by Covid stimulus!).
