I believe in gardening. I believe in humanity and kindness - books, education, candles, dirt, salt, roots, music, animals and their rights. I am firmly against fascism and a government that is not for the people. 🚫 MAGA, 🚫 Trump.

Given the serious flooding in parts of Ireland today, people will be talking about climate change, but there aren’t many of us who do climate talks for kids. There needs to be *far more* effort and money put into making the subject engaging, accessible and hopeful for them.

This hits hard if you’ve ever talked to kids in school about climate change. Attitudes vary from blocking it out, taking an active interest and feeling a deep dread over it. Teachers are often unprepared for all the questions they get asked. 80% of my effort in talks goes into making it digestable.

Global health impacts of plastics systems set to double by 2040
The adverse health impacts associated with emissions across the full life cycle of plastics could double by 2040 unless immediate action is taken, new research suggests.

Something cheerful!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugloss...

Enjoying breakfast coffee in my garden I kept seeing a brilliantly green insect pollinating my begonias. It can’t be a bee, I thought, but
I looked it up and it’s an orchid bee, a recent and beneficial arrival from Central America.

Great little update on the development of a large Japanese maple from Bonsaify.

Also, it was a great demonstration of how to do root grafting.

Testing out my Sony macro lens in the snow today. The flowers from last summer are nicely catching the snowfall. I appreciate the subtle brown tones the lens picks up. 🌺 🌱 🪴

Reading the chapter on Te Kiri O Tāne: The Bark of Tōtara.

Barking of Tōtara for pātua & barking of Tōtara for waka could absolutely be incorperated into AoNZ bonsai designs.
Especially for Tōtara bonsai forests.

I have an assortment of seeds ready to begin their journey, but the gardens are covered in snow (and will be for quite a while). This Zinnia was a delight 2024. Have a peaceful Friday🌱

January hardly seems like a time to be gardening. Indeed, November and December are better for starting garlic, broad beans and onion sets.

I remember designer Mary Keen saying some of the best snowdrops for naturalising are ordinary Galanthus nivalis. She's right! These are from a few bulbs and just part of the display along our drive, A real mood-lifter in these gloomy days - both the weather and the news.
