We’re shutting down immigration and canceling Afghanistani-Americans because of a single incident. But thousands of gun deaths, don’t require a single action of any kind. We’re not banning men, or young men, or abusive young men, or guns.

This wasn’t “mental health”? This one incident?

there are two schools of thought on protecting Jewish safety in America: we either fight for a pluralistic democracy where we are safe because minority rights are protected or we seek junior partner status in the MAGA white nationalist alliance

ADL removes ‘Protect Civil Rights’ from website as it narrows its mission amid right-wing attacks
The removal took place after FBI Director Kash Patel said he would cut ties with the ADL, though it is unclear if that has happened.

This makes some very good points and would make me hopeful if we didn’t live in the political climate that we have.

My rain lilies are blooming! We are just entering the rainy season and they got enough rain to decide to blossom. They will not do it for city water or anything else. So delicate and charming! A bright spot in a gloomy world!

This was a pot of purple dahlias. Now I’m battling iguanas with a spray of garlic and cayenne pepper run through the blender and then sieved. Of course it poured with rain the day after I sprayed but I’ll keep at it. They eat all my flowers and poop everywhere @gardennicola.bsky.social

Pope Francis was an advocate for the homeless, the marginalized, the vulnerable. We need more of this in our world to push back against the cruel and spiteful who abuse their power to make our world poorer.

Trump, Musk and Republicans have launched a full assault on Social Security, firing staff, closing field offices and making it harder for Americans to access their hard-earned benefits. We’re joining Social Security Works on Tuesday, the Social Security Day of Action, to (once again) say: Hands Off!
Hands off Social Security!
Social Security is facing the greatest threat of its nearly century-long existence. We have to fight back! Social Security Works is working to have as many rallies at Social Security offices as po...

This is very noticeable among students as well. Especially international students are increasingly reluctant to speak, even inside the classroom, because they are - understandably! rightfully! - frightened they might get punished by the regime.

It is heartbreaking and it makes me so fucking angry.
One sign that we are living under an authoritarian regime is that a lot of people are acting like they are living under an authoritarian regime.
The fear among academics and lawyers now talking on the record on just about any topic that involves the federal government or the White House is really extraordinary and worrisome, and getting worse, it seems to me, every week. Dissent by an establishment figures becoming verboten in the US

And we thought President Bonespurs didn’t like armed conflict? I have to say I think he’s going to back off the Gaza annihilation too, but how dare he threaten such a hideous debacle? There’s going to be fighting in the streets, not in Gaza but here. I’m sickened by it all.

After hurricane Milton: The beauty in these storms has to catch you unawares.

This is “Petals on wet wet, black bough” homage to Ezra Pound, a hard poet to dismiss. Anyway, it’s tiny leaves on a wet black trash can. Not the same but also gone by tomorrow. It would make great wallpaper.
