Reading headlines about the US massing forces to Venezuela and ”what is Trump’s aim with the troops ?” reminds me of a certain other country that massed troops at a neighbour’s border 4 years ago and headlines were wondering what Putin’s aim could possibly be

“it is a historic opportunity to shift the balance of power between Europe and Russia by exposing the Kremlin’s financial frailty and altering Putin’s calculus about war and peace. It is also a chance to speed up Europe’s efforts to establish its military and financial independence from America.”

“🇩🇪 has so far not made any public efforts to acquire an affordable long-range strike capability like a mini-cruise missile or long-range drone, which are needed to saturate enemy air defenses, and to efficiently engage lower-cost targets that do not warrant an expensive cruise or ballistic missile.”

Russia is paying around 2.4 million USD for 9M723 short-range ballistic missiles and Kh-101 land-attack cruise missiles.

In PPP-adjusted terms, that's around 0.81 million USD. That's a good deal, so Russia has done a pretty good job keeping costs low.

“Three years ago the idea of Ukraine attacking [russian illegal occupiers in] Crimea caused people to lose their heads, while last night hundreds of Ukrainian drones attacked targets, many in and around Moscow and Russia tried to shrug its shoulders.”

Pretty much it.
Last night Ukraine attacked Russian targets (including Moscow) with hundreds of drones and Russian authorities downplayed the event. Three years ago we were told if Ukraine attacked Crimea, Russia would go nuclear. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

Still quite cheap considering the alternatives
The Economist estimates Ukraine will need $389 billion in aid and weapons from 2026 to 2029, nearly double what Europe has given since the full-scale invasion began. With the U.S. pulling back, the financial burden now falls squarely on Europe’s shoulders.
