At one point in my obsessively reading OSR blogs, junking through home-printed zines, and debating random encounter tables at unreasonable hours, I noticed something strange. The OSR aesthetic was categorically more than a surface visual preference for somebody. It was a declaration of values. All of a sudden scratchy black-and-white illustrations, crazily layered pages, handmade maps, zine-style-ness, and general rejection of clean or corporate aesthetics felt meaningfully loaded.

Concept: chess with literally no rules changes but every piece has an elaborate backstory that the player must read before play begins. Sure, it’s easy to sacrifice a faceless nameless pawn, but not so easy when you know about their life story and everything that got them to this war

Resource scarcity is a mechanic of horror in #TTRPG. Ammo, food, time, water, medical supplies, magical/scientific whatsits, safe areas... It all contributes. Does it make things a bit spreadsheet-y? It can. But is also makes things more urgent, concerning, and adds stakes to actions. 1/2

MÖRKTOBER Day 19: Broken SHATTERED MAGE Pieces of a shattered obelisk scattered over a mile of scorched earth, each fragment no larger than a child’s fist, each containing a piece of Lorval the Tessellated, third of the bound wizards and the first to approach escape. Her consciousness persists in the stones, fractured but aware. Stand among the rubble and you’ll hear her disconnected whispers, all of her here in one place but lacking cohesion. A few of the fragments hold pieces of the spell she was casting when the shattering occured, but none remember enough to make her whole again. Fragment Collectors Mile and Jaren, siblings, who have been gathering the pieces of Lorval for two years. They keep them in lead boxes, dragged along on an old cart by their emaciated mule. They don't know what they hope to achieve by putting Lorval back together, but they are compelled to do it anyway. HP 3 Unarmoured Morale 7 Collecting hooks d6 They carry 47 fragments of Lorval. At the base of The Basin, the dead don’t surrender easily to the salvagers’ hooks. They cling to life even as their lungs fill with black water, and in their final thrashing moments, the stone at the bottom of the pit wrenches their fingernails loose. The nails drift down through the dark water and settle in the sediment alongside the iron collars and forgotten coins. They absorb something from the darkness - perhaps desperation, or the final fierce refusal to die. Ostrid and her crew collect them as a side hustle. BASIN NAILS Sold in sets of ten for 80s. Each is grey-black and brittle, stained with sediment and old blood. When ground into powder and mixed with water they create a murky black drink. Those who ingest it must Test Presence DR14. On success, they can breathe underwater for d6 hours, though each breath tastes of drowning and desperation. On failure, they become convinced they’re drowning even on dry land (d2 damage per round until restrained and calmed).

The trees that ring the clearing are dead and dying but still stand, their bark twisted into leering faces, the only thing that remains of the cultists who once worked their rites here. In the creak of the branches you can still hear their death cries, their sad laments barely a whisper on the wind. Those who spend the night in the clearing are tormented by violent visions of pulsing red, rending flesh, twisting gristle, hot muscle tearing and pulling apart at the seams. On waking, Test Presence DR 12. Failure: Lose d2 from a random Attribute, permanently. Success: Learn one of the following Powers. You can cast it once per day. FLESHWARP Your bones crack and reform. Roll d6: 1-2: Gain an extra arm (make an additional attack each round, DR 14); 3-4: Legs fuse into a serpent tail (Defense DR10 but you can't walk); 5-6: Face splits open revealing fanged maw (d6 bite attack). Lasts d4 hours. Test Presence DR12 or permanent. SKINLESS COMMUNION Peel away your flesh to become one with the world. Take d6 damage. For the next hour, you can flow through cracks, sense vibrations through walls, and are immune to blades and bludgeons. Test Toughness DR14 afterward or gain permanent -1 HP. MEAT PUPPET Touch a corpse. Your consciousness transfers into it while your body collapses. Control the corpse for d6 hours. The corpse rots visibly (lose 1 point from random ability each hour). When the effect ends, Test Presence DR12 or your soul takes d4 hours to find its way back to your body. BONEGARDEN Your skeleton sprouts through your skin like thorns. Take d6 damage. Anyone who touches or strikes you in melee takes d4 damage. Lasts d6 rounds. Test Toughness DR10 after. On failure, your bones don't fully retract (permanent -1 Presence, +1 to all Defense DRs).
