"Fophef" is a brilliant new Dutch word. It means a fake hysteria about something, and I'd love to know if there's an equivalent in English...

Angus, there's a thing I do when I want to empty my head: I go out for a walk, and with every step I take, I say a word. The rules are simple: no repetition, no connections.

For example,

Freak, love, serendipity, callous, shale, polity
One like = one thing I love, but I'm going to do them as inspiration strikes, not all at once.

Knitters. Knitters have to change their gauge all the time, and are always pissed off about it.
do you have any idea how much you have to piss somebody off to make them change their gauge
#Finland will begin to #Russia - proof its rail network, integrate with EU train infrastructure.

The Finnish government has announced the conversion of its rail network from Russian gauge (1,524 mm) to European standard (1,435 mm).

Dutch answer to the removal of the boards at #Margraten US military cemetery, honoring black US soldiers who died while liberating the Netherlands in WWII. This grave injustice went counterproductive for the US government, as shown.

The New Devil makes us spend hours and hours in a doom-loop of customer "service".
Call me a luddite but I kind of prefer the old version of the Devil who used to put a murrain on crops and command his demon dogs to terrorise church congregations to the new one who insists on having an app for everything and gets rich by designing clever ways of capitalising on people's fatigue.

At David Niven's funeral, the largest wreath was from the porters at Heathrow Airport with a note reading, "To the finest gentleman who ever walked through these halls. He made a porter feel like a king."
Be kind to everyone.

Giving my three girls one of these pendants for Christmas!

It's a celebration of my strandjutter's love of sea-glass, and admission of how artists, much smarter than me, use it to create beautiful art.

If you can, look up artists and give their pieces as gifts this holiday season...
Have added more seaglass pendents and seaglass fairy lights to Etsy. Limited availability but will be added more soon 💙

MTG running for president?
Marjorie Taylor Greene: This has been one of the most destructive things to MAGA, watching the man that we supported early on, three elections... watching this actually turn into a fight has ripped MAGA apart... the American people won't tolerate any other bullshit.

Back in 1980, as a teenager, I bought a military coat at a surplus store in Switzerland. My boyfriend painted a Chinese dragon on the back, with my name. I have it still!

Hey Avery, my husband is 73 years old and still working in the building industry. He spends a disproportionate amount of time assessing work wear. Here in Europe, the Scandinavian companies (eg Snickers) are the best.

Pick up the phone! Avoid stupid ping-pong app exchanges that only achieve frustration!
Don't leave a trail of messages that could later be used against you!
Especially e-mails with Jeffrey Epstein...

Last November, I went to visit family in California and the exchange rate was pretty good: €0.90 to the dollar. Today, it's €0.86.
Not so much difference on the total cost of a trip. But in terms of macro-economics, it's HUGE!
A bunch of folks have asked me what this looks like in local currency terms. Here's the chart.

It's a similar story: The performance of the U.S. stock market during the Trump presidency is... ~~meh~~

I need everyone who uses AI to generate art & text to notice what Vince Gilligan says here. You're surrendering your brain, your creativity, the divine spark within you to a machine. Someday you'll wake up and find you're no longer capable of writing or thinking. And for what?

Don't piss in my purse and tell me that it's raining...
I would like to take this opportunity to get on the record and apologize: I had complained about how every single thing at the grocery store now costs five dollars more than it used to, but I had not seen the latest data from DoorDash's State of Local Commerce report, which disproves that.
At some point embarrassment MUST come

Ukrainian border guards presented Angelina Jolie with a set of national symbols and a State Border Guard Service coin.

I'm still amazed! I can't get over her visiting Kherson, one of the most dangerous places in Ukraine, where Russians hunt civilians with drones for sport and entertainment.

If Ukraine joined NATO, it would not be the end of Russian civilisation, rather the opportunity for Russia to take a step back and examine it's role in the world. Perhaps for its own betterment...
"If Ukraine joined NATO, it would be the end of civilization." — says a history textbook penned by the "distinguished Russian historian" Medinsky. With material like this, plus state TV and endless propaganda, it’s a miracle Russians can still find their way to the refrigerator.

Oooooo, Roman roads! And a lovely video, to boot...
Of course, we're missing a couple (hello, from Nyon in Switzerland up over St Cergue in the Jura!), and I would've liked a bit in the video about planting trees along the roads to shade marching troops, but this is nonetheless v cool!
Wow! 😮🤩
There's a new interactive map of Every Known Road in the Roman Empire!! 🤓
