Thinking a lot about how poorly our brains recognize long term subtle changes, like climate change or biodiversity loss. We've lost something like 1 out of every 4 individual birds in the US since 1970, more for some species.

There should be at least 25% more birds around you right now.

You have to understand what pieces like this from the NYT are and are not.

They are not an honest assessment of the state of politics today.

They are a negotiation tactic—an effort by a calcified, right-leaning legacy institution to steer the discourse in a direction more palatable to elites.

(i put the camera down after 'in defense of smashing cameras' went big bc i was terrified of the homies thinking i was evil! turns out, i put a part of my soul down, too & now we are Reckoning.)

1. In the wake on Mamdani’s win, we’ll see a lot more far right anti-urban sentiment. Here’s a thread on its roots and evolution.

The idea that the city is evil and corrupt, and the countryside innocent and pure, goes back a long way: to Theocritus in Alexandria, and to the Old Testament. 🧵

i don't think you can be meaningfully anti-abuse or anti-oppression without having compassion for the fact that being abused & oppressed can make you fxking crazy.

(i say, as a well-known crazy person.)

Turns out poor people spent a lot of money on tea and sugar *because they were poor* and that was their inadequate replacement for unaffordable things like cooking fuel, food with actual nutritional content, and enough calories to slave away over a loom for 12 hours.

i want to hope this descent into america fascism will result in a positive, progressive, accountability-focused rebound.

but, uh, given all of the other genocides this country has committed & gotten away with, ✨ i doubt it ✨

Let's also not forget TPUSA houses a LOT of Neo-Nazis and avowed fascists. These aren't just uwu smol bean conservatives, they are virulently racist, antisemitic, misognystic transphobes who want us dead. They just couch it in "debate" so it's accepted in society. Do not fall for it.

Journalists aren't required to regurgitate whatever a spokesperson tells them. Edit it down to what's germane. Don't repeat insults or lies – unless you blow up the lies. It's your news space – don't surrender it to spokespeople. That doesn't make you look "fair" – it makes you look like a tool.
I consume a massive amount of political news. And in every story the reporter contacts the specific Trump admin spokesperson for comment and the response is always a venomous personal insult followed by praise for Trump or a cabinet official. I realize that has always been standard journalistic

i have so much empathy for those whose hearts are broken from deep grief & pain.

but, part of loving someone is telling them that their pain is hurting others & themselves, even more.

truly wild how heads of state will start wars, displace people & will then complain about immigrants — going so far as to rile their followers up to hate crime the very refugees their wars created.

This behavior is a big reason why so many gravitated to MAGA and why many more stayed home.

People would rather have a strong leader than a moral one.

It’s possible to have both

It appears we have neither.
