I just want to pause for a moment from ICE news to post this obituary. The Lobster Lady, Maine's oldest lobster trapper has died. Ginny Oliver was 105.

Currently battling a head cold that wants to move to my chest. Not sure who is winning right now, but today is day 4 of lying still and not flaring my asthma.

Retirement will mean just managing my health without worrying how my cold is affecting those outside my household. Hadn’t thought of that.

My 75yo father doesn’t want to use his computer at all anymore between AI and scams. I think this is a more common feeling than is being recognized.
my 75yo mother told me last night that she’s planning to delete Instagram and Facebook because she’s sick of not being able to tell what’s AI and what’s not, and I genuinely don’t think tech companies have reckoned with this kind of move as an actual possibility

This ruling is designed to sow more distrust of schools in communities. My stomach hurts thinking about all the young people who will have fewer safe adults in their lives because some homes are not safe spaces for many reasons.

Well, there goes a quiet news Saturday to start the year, I guess. My brain started with three permutations of “next” and it’s an alarming amount of cortisol for the first Saturday of the year.

Spent a good chunk of time today building a bridge to what might lie on the other side of teaching, and tonight I feel good about democracy to celebrate the sesquicentennial next year. I earned a whole PhD in American Studies for the spirit of ‘76. (Remember the red white & blue fire hydrants?)

If I were running the DNC, there would be Democratic Party sponsored food relief banks across the country right now that specifically welcomed anyone regardless of party affiliation.

Along with the food, there could be voter registration and links to runforsomething.net

And I spoke with a professor at Rutgers Marine Sciences who says they can put the windmills far enough offshore that they don’t block the view from the shore.
The people living near America's first commercial offshore wind farm love it. Cheaper electricity, mroe reliable power: www.nytimes.com/2025/09/22/c...

Food insecurity is ALWAYS a political choice. Famine is ALWAYS manmade. People go hungry because of other people’s decisions. We have more than enough food for everyone, and enormous amounts of it are wasted—literally thrown in the garbage—on purpose.
