If DOGE has "saved" by most estimates $35B, and the Trump regime is going to spend $45B on detaining immigrants... how does this math work, again? www.nytimes.com/2025/04/07/u...
Trump Administration Aims to Spend $45 Billion to Expand Immigrant Detention
A request for proposals for new detention facilities and other services would allow the government to expedite the contracting process and rapidly expand detention.

I’m not saying that these links are guaranteed to be better than scrolling through social media, but I would wager on it.

If I’m wrong, let me know and I’ll do better next time. And maybe buy you an ice cream cone.

I know your days are precious

But what are you trying

The living? The miraculous

I am annoyed (and surprised) that "smurf" is not a legal word in the Wordle dictionary. I've seen the 1980s cartoon, and so I know that "smurf" is a valid rood for a verb, noun, adverb, and adjective.

The less I read the news and the more I read books, the happier I get. So I guess I should be grateful to the daily horrors from the White House, because they're dramatically motivating me to spend a lot of time in fiction.

Trump's mental decline is worrisome.

Robert Johnson was about to sell his soul to the devil, who smiled with glee.
But before he signed, an evil far worse showed up, making even Satan tremble. It was the record executives and their lawyers.

I wonder how MAGA people would feel if the next democrat president were to revamp DOGE and cut off funding to the military? Even though Congress approved the budget, the new POTUS redirects all funding to create universal healthcare?

Also, my MAGA-leaning friend just told me that the WSJ is "totally liberal." Have I just lost all track of how the world works?

Is it just me or does "out for delivery" mean something other than "it's on the truck, and you're on the route." I've had a package OFD for six hours, and the est delivery time is... still four hours away.

It's like the trucks are Santa's sleigh now.

I was opposed to red dye no. 3 before it was cool.

Not that I did anything about it, but if you would have asked how I feel about red dye no. 3, I would have said, "not great, really." Because I am on the cutting edge of health, science, and red dye no. 3.

@gruber.foo Regarding cities with competition in newspapers, Salt Lake City metro area (1.2M pop) has two major papers, each with a very different demographic and perspective. Only a medium sized market, but real competition in print journalism does exist here.

I've been listening to young guys (late 30s and early 40s) at work get very excited about the rise of all their crypto, and they will always ask me how much bitcoin I own, or what currencies I have in my wallet.

"None," I say. "I have never owned a nickel's worth of crypto."
