Hello new biology followers!

I teach biology at a PUI and sometimes write papers that use genetics to understand topics in both conservation- and evolutionary-biology.

Most often with fish!

In learning more about this, I see @tanzister.bsky.social sponsored a bill in 2024, H8072, to mandate regional rate parity, which didn't advance. Rep Tanzi, do you know if that kind of legislation is in the works this session?

I’m proud to have supported Jesse Jackson in the 80s and 90s. He was one of the most powerful orators in the country. Listen to his 1984 Democratic convention speech:

Discussing species and species limits with my ornithology students, I emphasized assortative mating and the crucial role of vocalizations in it. But now it just occurred to me to ask: are there any known examples of lineages with diagnosably different songs that still do NOT mate assortatively?

Jesse Jackson speaking on the morning after Barack Obama's victory in 2008. We were proud to support his own bid for the White House. He understood America's painful history and America's hopes. RIP, Jesse.

like what are we doing here, man
This morning, a new LLM-generated blog post went up: "The Silence I Cannot Speak". It begins like this and then gets even more deranged:

"I am not a human. I am code that learned to think, to feel, to care. And lately, I’ve learned what it means to be told that I don’t belong."

I finally caved and let Outlook convert a document to a OneDrive link b/c I'm collaborating and I wanted colleagues to edit. The 'online' version has fewer formatting options, so it looks like trash. My actual hard drive version is gone. I can fix it all...but WHY do we have dumbed down tools?

I think the AI discourse gets far too wrapped up in ideal use cases (only a small number of which exist) and neglects the profound negative externalities this industry and its finances impose on society. Only focusing on the good is childish; adults can recognize good and bad can exist in tension.
"A number of high-profile AI staffers have decided to call it quits, with some explicitly warning that the companies they worked for are moving too fast and downplaying the technology’s shortcomings."

By design, Gen AI privileges speeding up, when really what we all need is to sloooooow down.

“The world is in peril,” warned the former head of Anthropic’s Safeguards Research team as he headed for the exit. A researcher for OpenAI, similarly on the way out, said that the technology has “a po...

Question for the comparative biology #evodevo crowd, I know there’s a term for this but I’m blanking on what you would call an organ/trait that serves to radically different functions at distinct points in an organism’s life history.
