To talk about something causally affecting something else, it doesn’t matter whether it’s sufficient or necessary. It also doesn’t matter if there are mediating mechanisms — technically, everything in the social sciences needs to be mediated somehow!

Sometimes a causal effect is just a causal effect (regardless of how it’s mediated or moderated)
TL;DR: Tell your students about the potential outcomes framework. It will have (heterogeneous) causal effects on their understanding of causality (mediated through unknown pathways), I promise.

50 years ago, an investigation of federal abuses revealed how the government surveilled and sabotaged the Civil Rights movement, and the Anti-war movement, and the international left. It can teach us more about our current moment than we realize.

I saw this advertisement yesterday and was blown away by how brazenly and openly they boast about their role in the surveillance state. And then saddened that people will be happy to collaborate in the 24/7 surveillance of society just in the off-chance that a lost puppy might be found one day.

What's the difference between states like Florida, where ICE arrests are sky-high, and states like Illinois with much lower rates of arrests? It's all about police & jails.
Arrest rates out of homes, workplaces, etc are similar – but reining in sheriffs makes all the difference.

Every state in the country, Blue and Red, jails children. They even have special jails for them, how nice of us. We should not be jailing any children ever (or adults for that matter)
