A bit of a detour from Oamaru through the Lindispass before heading back to Ōtepoti Dunedin.

Rows and rows of cars heading to Queenstown 🙈 but did see some blue sky 😆

Technically wrong
Bishop has removed the cumbersome MDRS but the updated NPS-UD has much stronger provisions towards "town housing, walk up apartments, and mixed use (which Labour refused to enable in 2021).

Proof of the pudding will be the Standardised Zones that are being drafted next year

Speaking of housing, if anyone in Dunedin knows of a self-contained unit that's:

-close to public transit
-under $500pw
-ideally pet-friendly (no current pet, but I'd like to get a dog)
-quiet, warm and fairly low maintenance

I'm looking, and would love something that works long-term.

Now imagine backing up the cycle network with INTER CITY RAIL running all day every day up and down both Islands
For the price of less than ONE of National's Roads of National Party Significance you could expand the cycle network right across the motu, returning benefits easily 10x (so $12.8b) of what we have now (which is already formidable at $1.28b).

And more than RoNS will EVER return to Aotearoa 🚲 👇
So cycling tourism particularly in the South Island is worth $1.28b to our national economy. And it will only expand.

NOW IMAGINE boosting cycle tourism even further into our big cities!
Exploring Auckland by e bike would be quite scenic given its very diverse geography!

He's obviously awful and profoundly wrong (with just enough truth to justify the whining).

But, in a way, he's also right, in that the govt should do a whole host more, such that some charities are not required, and it should all be paid for by a substantial wealth tax.

Even smaller Dutch cities have superb cycling infrastructure. With high quality cycling links to the surrounding area and a fantastically walkable city centre, Leiden is a great example.

Great article in The Press today.

“…cycling is no longer just a weekend hobby. It has become a small but serious part of the South Island economy – from tourism operators and motels to bike shops, and city transport budgets.”

Interesting to note the % increase in e-bikes local bike shops are

From billion-dollar rail trails and grey-haired e-bikers to packed Christchurch cycleways – we map how cycling quietly became one of the South Island’s most important little economies.

I tried to go around this car that was parked in the middle of the brand new bike lane on Great Nth Rd, and managed to skid on the road bumpers in the rain or something and went absolutely flying. I’m quite bruised & was in shock, but otherwise ok. I do hope this cunt gets towed, however.

My understanding of the ‘luck’ that delivered Australia’s happy flood of solar, has a deep realpolitik side: PM Howard, needing to do something but unable to upset Big Carbon, settled on incentivising household solar, cos no-one, least all coal+gas, thought it would ever amount to anything at all!

People are picky and look for real bargains, but it was great to see many people enjoying the city centre. Not only benefiting shops, but also hospitality.

Those French winding stairs that look so dangerous on plans actually feel totally natural when you’re walking on them. I’ve heard that in France, they’re considered safer than straight runs, since there’s a wall close by to break your fall. Would be nice for somebody to do some ergonomics research.
