I love this philosophy! It’s important to create realistic habits that you can manage long-term over tight restrictions that make you more likely to give up. By practicing moderation and doing exercise, we can enjoy what we like with less guilt.
Career lifetime achievement goal: To argue with people about GMOs, sugars, & seed oils until I’m dead. Or retired. Whichever comes first. 🙃

My philosophy: Enjoy eating for better health. Balance, not restriction. And, move. 💪🏼

I plan to incorporate nutrition into my future career by having open, nonjudgmental conversations with my patients about their diet. This makes them more comfortable sharing their eating habits with me so that we can have honest discussions to create a plan if needed. #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

So great before the holidays! Moderation is always a great practice, and there is no need to uphold strict dietary measures all the time.
Thanksgiving isn’t about perfection or guilt. Eat what you enjoy, but listen to your body. If you’re full, stop. You can have leftovers tomorrow. Food should be part of the celebration, not the stress. #RealWorldNutrition

I’m looking forward to eating mashed potatoes on Thanksgiving! We don’t have a recipe, but my family likes to make it chunky with gravy. #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

This ties into what we’ve discussed this week. Definitely a great place to look when considering resources to share for children nutrition.

Really great point! Not all foods are necessarily better because of labels like “raw” or “natural.” It is important to be mindful of this as we choose our foods to make sure we are making choices beneficial for us.
Raw milk isn’t the “pure” health food it’s claimed to be. Pasteurization doesn’t ruin milk — it keeps it safe. Learn what’s real and what’s risky: www.shelleyrael.com/blog/raw-milk #RealWorldNutrition

I learned that obesity can lead to health avoidant behaviors, as some will avoid seeking medical care to avoid realizing the gravity of their situation. It is important to encourage patients seek out care sooner rather than later before the consequences become too dire. #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

This is a really great read! I think this is definitely important to keep in mind when discussing what factors affect food consumption. I’ve definitely had times of high stress that affected my eating habits.

Something I learned is that weight stigma can lead to many people avoiding going to the doctors, which can cause more stress and weight gain. I think this is important to keep in mind professionally to ensure that I am not worsening that stigma with patients. @beh353.bsky.social #beh353

Super important! I think it’s really easy to think of these issues one dimensionally, but they are definitely multifaceted and require a lot of reflection on what factors are at play.
Hunger isn’t only about food. It’s tied to income, housing, education, and access to grocery stores. Real nutrition solutions start by understanding those bigger systems. #RealWorldNutrition

Lack of time to plan and prepare healthy foods is definitely a huge factor for me. I spend a lot of the day doing school, working, or doing homework. I’m usually so tired after that I just go for a quick option so I have more time to rest. #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

I love this! A lot of cultural food is branded as “unhealthy,” but that’s not all they are. They should be able to be enjoyed without the looming idea that they are harmful to us.
“food is just fuel” is a popular saying in the fitness world. and sure, food can be fuel, but it can also be so much more.

food can be a way to connect with other people, cultures, and our memories.

you don’t have to moralize foods or punish yourself for enjoying them.

I think this is a really great thing to keep in mind! It is so easy to read the labels and assume, but that’s what these companies want to happen. It is importance to be cautious and take some of these words with a grain of salt.

This is a great article! I love the idea of debunking popular misconceptions. There are so many popular press articles or stories about what foods are good/bad for you or what diet is the best way to lose weight. I think it’s great that there are RDs out there fighting against this.

I researched the Paleo diet, which cuts out processed food by consuming foods similar to what was consumed during this era (ex: fish, vegetables, fruit, seeds, nuts, etc.) While this sounded interesting, I found out that it can actually lead to nutrient deficiencies. #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

This is a really great point! Too many foods are stuck with a label of “too sugary, too fatty, etc” without considering all the facts and how they can be beneficial. We need to do more research into what we’re eating rather than just jump to conclusions.
"Omg fruit is full of sugar and so bad for you!" Have you considered that it's also full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber? And a fun fact is that our bodies need these nutrients so no, it's not the same as eating something like ice cream. Not that anything is wrong with ice cream.

Something that I tend to make a lot is pasta. To make it more nutrient-dense, I could blend cottage cheese into the sauce for more protein content and switch to whole wheat pasta for more fiber. I could also incorporate more vegetables such spinach for more vitamins. #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

I think that my 24-hour food recall was not as accurate as it could be. It was hard to recall everything because I like to snack in between meals. I was surprised to see how many different foods I snacked on because it looks like a lot on paper. @beh353.bsky.social #beh353

Really great point about consistency. Many diets fail or people gain weight after stopping them because it isn’t feasible as a permanent lifestyle change. Smaller changes that you can do everyday can have a greater impact in the long run over a big change that only lasts a couple months.
Self-care often gets dismissed as indulgence, but it is really about maintenance. Fueling with real food, staying hydrated, moving the body, and giving the mind a break are basic health needs. Consistency matters more than intensity. #RealWorldNutrition #Wellness

One fun fact about carbohydrates is that our brain is very dependent on it! The brain almost exclusively uses glucose for energy and function, so it is necessary to intake carbohydrates to get that glucose. @beh353.bsky.social #beh353

I think this is a really important point. Healthy eating habits involve being intentional with what you want to put in your body and how much. You don’t necessarily have to just eat or not eat certain foods just because it’s considered healthy or unhealthy.
There’s a difference in choosing foods that make you feel physically better versus following rules because you “should”.
