Václav Horčička writes that, in 1917, at meeting of returned U.S. consuls, Austrian authorities said many emigrants would return after war. Hungary alone expected 300,000.

Only Czechs had entirely broken up with Austria.

Peak hate against great Fritz Kreisler, married to an American woman.

In 1917, Pittsburgh mayor declared he would gladly convene a jury to judge Kreisler. Eventually, Kreisler canceled all U.S. charity concerts.

In famous 1907 case, Philadelphia consul Thodorovich sued Franz Joseph Beneficial Association to stop Association using emperor's image in promotional materials.

Association founded in 1887 by Jewish Austrian subjects. Continues today as Pannonia Beneficial Association.

Fun fact: In most of the world, the proper address for an Ambassador is "Your Excellency." The same title is used for a Consul General who heads up a post.

In a tradition that dates back to the early days of the Republic, the US calls Ambassadors "Mr./Ms. Ambassador" rather than "Your Excellency."
