U.S. Ambassador to Austria-Hungary in July 1914, Frederic Courtland Penfield became alarmed by Russian army success on Eastern Front. In November 1914 asked State Department to relocate diplomatic mission to a potential new capital of Austro-Hungarian govt.

He and Hearst, Jr., talk about Jr. going to Vienna to meet Austrian Chancellor Dollfuss, and Dollfuss offering him the Grand Gold Decoration for Service to Austria.

Like Klimt, Egon Schiele hardly had a reception among collectors in the U.S. As a result, very few of his paintings are on permanent displays in U.S. museums.

On the other hand, if you had $1500 in 1930, and were out shopping in Michigan, you could have gone home with two Schiele works.

After 1934, Austrian government fell all over Hungary, giving state medals, awards, and decorations to Hungarian citizens like priests and communion wafers at mass.

During post-1918 "hunger years" in Austria, Americans of all backgrounds and organizations provided food relief to Austria.

One such organization was Austro-Hungarian Relief Society in Philadelphia.

Here, Society seeks guarantees that food will reach its destination...which Austrian govt provides.
