In 2026, I want one thing – a kidney donated from a living donor for my partner. I've lost sleep over whether I should post this – it's a massive ask. Sometimes I wonder if it's asking too much? But the reality is that I'm unable to donate my kidney, and he has zero family who are in the position

Because UoA has no guidelines on payment rates for guest lectures, I was looking for reasonable information online and found this UNSW page showing casual academic pay rates.

I'm sure this is news to nobody but casual staff are MASSIVELY underpaid in NZ.

Wellington's Moa Point sewage treatment plant has no power, currently spilling raw sewage into the sea. "Could be some time."
Ask Christchurch East how long that might be.

You live on the Kāpiti Coast, you're a pensioner, you remember when this was just baches for whole whānau and a few locals, you remember when you could buy a house on a single wage, you remember when the pipes worked, you remember when there was a local post office... you vote National

The era of regular rail shutdowns in Auckland is almost over, phew! But train ridership has fallen in recent years, suggesting a loss of public confidence.

Now, with the CRL opening on the horizon, is Auckand Transport ready to run a proper metro timetable? Matt Lowrie tracks some worrying signs...
A metro rail timetable to match the infrastructure? - Greater Auckland
Every summer for the last 20 years some, if not all of Auckland’s rail network has been shut down for weeks on end as major upgrades take place – upgrades such as double tracking, electrification, new...

So we're in February now, and I'm sharing this again because getting my other half a kidney from a live donor is still my number one priority from 26. If you're in NZ and want to know more – or just talk about it, please reach out to me. It would mean a lot.

And please share the original post 🥰

good riddance to Minister Judith Collins, who orchestrated the present gutting of New Zealand's science funding establishment

I've not seen or heard any coverage today that mentions this tiny detail, affecting 100s of millions of public dollars and endangering NZ's entire intellectual community
Judith Collins resigns after a near quarter century in politics
She has been in Parliament for more than 20 years, as the MP for Clevedon, and then Papakura.

Another trope I've heard a couple of times recently is that "the Greens used to be the party of environmentalism ...and they should go back to being just that"

...despite the fact we've more than doubled our number of MPs in that time 🤔
Literally thinking about this in the NZ context today, why is it always "the Greens should try to appeal to dairy farmers and people who drive Humvees" and not "NZ First should try to appeal to people who went to university and believe in human rights"
To the extent you have any education, consult with any legitimate news sources, know anything about what's happening in the world, you vote Dem. To the extent you don't, you vote Republican.

The fun thing is watching pundits strain mightily to cast this as something *negative about the Dem Party*.

ALSO it cannot be stated enough that whenever the Greens have spoken/do speak about the environment, we're called tree-hugging loonies who can't be taken seriously! It's almost like the rich and powerful just want to shut down any critique of the status quo ...

life ending and infrastructure destroying floods are now an annual occurrence in new zealand. there is no political recognition of this new reality, and thus there is no resourcing for its prevention. we are not ready

I was speaking to an ex-Mayor about a decade ago who said that climate change would bankrupt Councils.

They're not wrong.

We can't keep spending millions every year fixing the same roads over and over. Something has to give.
