She looked over his lunch, now spread across his lap and the dash. “That’s not all you got though, is it?” “I’m really uncomfortable talking about this. I really don’t like people commenting on my food.” She shifted in her seat and leaned closer. “What’s in the little paper bag, though?” “French fries.” They locked eyes. Neither blinked. “And don’t go telling me they’re not authentically French-y, I do not care.” “No, they are.” She leaned back. “The Belgians tried to claim them but they’re a whole country of liars.” “Cool. My lunch has set off an international incident.”

Chapter 1 On December the twenty-fourth, at a small café in Londontown, Lucky Norwood stood in line. A line that did not seem particularly interested in shortening itself, regardless of how many seconds she watched tick away on the clock affixed to the wall behind the counter, just between the two animated display boards that never seemed to show off the shop’s full menu at once. Dressed professionally, with a peacoat that looked to have not seen too many winters, the low morning sunlight drifting through the front windows gave a glow to the golden curls that spilled from atop her head. Just ahead of her was a man, by all appearances a few years older than her, shabbily clothed. His outermost layer was a heavy winter coat, a few sizes too large for him, with a fur-trimmed hood. He was a tall man, though that probably couldn’t be helped. Between him and the counter there were several people, standing in as best of a single file line as they could manage, given their pre-caffeinated state in the early hour. Finally, it was the man’s turn to order. Hesitantly, he stepped towards the counter; the large fellow behind the register gave him a nod. “Do you have any suspended coffees?” the man asked. The barista gave his head a solemn shake. “Nah, sorry mate.” “Ah, alright, thanks anyway.”

USPS didn't bring me my paycheck (even though it's in Informed Delivery) but did bring back a package I'd sent out on Friday. There's no "return to sender" label or anything, so I have to assume several people at USPS don't know the difference between the "to" and "from" blocks on a shipping label.

Trainer’s eyebrow cocked. He held out a hand, palm side up, towards Phan. “Give me your hand.” She did as instructed, holding out her arm. Trainer took hold of her wrist and ran the stone across her fingertip before releasing her. He held the stone to the light. Where Phan touched it, it shimmered a slight greenish color. He presented it to the old man. “This should be blue.” “It’s fine. As long as it’s not red, you’ll be okay. Pink probably isn’t great, either.” “Can you just go now?” asked the clerk. “Is there a reason you’re so eager to get rid of me?” Trainer asked. “Yes. You’re clearly a cop.” “He’s not,” said the old man. “I’m not,” said Trainer. “Well you’ve got cop energy. And the local governors don’t like cops.” “Governors? You mean the gangs.” “Same thing around here. But if they see you’re here, they’ll probably kill you.” “They won’t succeed,” Trainer said. “Unless you’ve got an army backing you up, I wouldn’t risk it.” Trainer looked the stone over once more. “I suppose I don’t have that.” He looked to Phan. “Come on. There’s nothing else for us here.” “Okay.”

She noticed the other cadets huddled around one of the tables, excitedly whispering to one another. “What’s going on?” She approached the table. Jase gave her a very self-satisfied grin. “Xank found this data slip.” “I didn’t find it. You did. Why are you trying to blame me?” “Well, whatever, you decrypted it.” “What is it?” asked Lizz. “And why are you being so weird about it?” “We didn’t want anyone to hear,” said Jase. “Hear what? And anyone who? Trainer left the ship almost an hour ago.” “He did?” Barzan asked. “Yeah. Didn’t he tell you?” “He did not,” said Xank. “Well, whatever. What’s up with this data slip?” “It’s Talla’s.” Jase’s grin didn’t fade. It felt unseemly. “Oh, God, there aren’t pictures of her or something on it, are there?” Lizz asked. “No, there…” Jase’s smile finally faded, “actually, we didn’t think to look for that yet.” He looked to Xank. Xank shook his head. “No, but it’s a whole bunch of stuff from when she was undercover,” Jase continued. “That can’t be real,” said Lizz. “What do you mean?” “That stuff would be highly encrypted. Not even Xank could break it.”
