With criminality this serious ending in death, what other crime would escape national news? This was only BBC local. What more must happen for a lifetime ban? Driving is a privilege, not a right. Our culture — and sentencing — needs radical change.

@jonathanhaidt.bsky.social showed in The Anxious Generation the awful impact too much screen time is having on kids health. Against that, it’s devastating that children are being put off cycling. Active travel boosts physical and mental health. We should make it normal, safe and joyful — not rare. 🚲
"We see millions of people who want to ride, but are being pushed away by barriers that should not exist, from the lack of availability and complexity of maintenance to concerns about whether it is safe for children to cycle"

Can anyone *imagine* what would have happened if it had become public, at the height of the financial crisis, that Mandelson was leaking to Wall Street, and advising bankers to threaten his own Government? To stop a tax on bankers' bonuses!

Would the Government have fallen?

The victim blaming of people walking or cycling and injured or killed in road collisions is off-the-charts shocking.

It seems motor normativity is so ingrained that people desperately clutch at the language of “accidents” or worse just blame the victims.

Police leadership must do more to recognise this is core to our mission. Saving life, tackling crime, and increasing public confidence. We make our communities safer when we deny active criminals use of the road. Embed the ethos of ‘Not every driver is a criminal but every criminal is a driver’.
Police in Birmingham held a roads policing operation, supported by volunteer Special Constables.

In one evening on one road, they pulled over 166 vehicles and took action in a staggering 1 in 3 stops.
