Beyond thrilled to share that I'm writing my next book, AT HOME IN THE STARS. It's about the human expansion into space and space as a human environment. Think Carl Sagan meets Robert Macfarlane. 🪐✨🧑‍🚀🌱 If you want updates / news when the book is (someday) out: jaimealyse.behiiv.com
very pleasing thread
Last year, I reviewed every single NBA City Edition hat. I have something special planned for later this month when the new editions drop (watch this space!), but, when I saw New Era release these HARDWOOD CLASSICS hats, I knew I could not stay silent. So, as a prelude, here goes HAT CRITICISM:
🧵
Ok, it's a new day, it's a blue sky, I want to find a very specific niche of the internet. I love hoops, I love hats, and I love writing criticism. I'm going to review all thirty of the 2024-2025 NBA City Edition New Era fitted hats that dropped today. Here goes nothing... 1/x

The lesson of an exercise like this is that not all change is progress. Every step the Nuggets take away from this logo is one further step out of the Light of the Lord. They should install stained glass windows with this logo in the Ball Arena. Nikola Jokic should play in a rainbow cassock. 9/x

My kid does better making potions out of shampoo and conditioner in the bath
I am obsessed with this guy in the Rancho Gordo FB Group who decided to spend hours working with AI to figure out "the best" bean recipe instead of.....looking at actual recipes

Truly an abomination — and such a good example of how AI tricks us into thinking we can reinvent the wheel with its help

Yale Anthropology is doing an open rank search for environmental anthropology. Happy to answer questions in DMs (I am not on the search committee). We’re a lovely department (imo) and given the current higher ed atmosphere, Yale has been doing a decent job at getting us thru (knock on wood).

One cool thing about @coyotemedia.org is that we can collaboratively write a little thing like this at 9pm and include a silly little photoshopped graphic and no boss paid $$$$ can stop us.

So, I do think the Democratic party should run on a full-throated defense of immigration as innately American and how trans rights are fundamental human rights, but I also think a third plank should be impeachment, to correct abuses from impoundment and take back Congress' power

my parents haven’t lived in nyc since the 1990s and when they watched the mayoral debates this year they were like “wait that weird little guy with the hat we used to see around everywhere?” literally a generational weird little guy
it’s not a proper city until you have one weird guy who keeps running for office and will never win, who everyone in the city knows but nobody anywhere else knows
it's pretty enjoyable seeing people who are now following the NYC election and just discovering the existence of Curtis Sliwa and you can feel the ???????s floating around their faces

Or it's not a safety net, exactly, but the truth that almost no one makes their whole income from public-facing/bylined journalism or, lol, creative writing. Teaching, editing, copywriting, etc - you gotta have your anchor client, and art is never it.
Many full time creatives have “invisible safety nets” like bread-winning partners, trust funds, external support, etc. No shame on anyone, but it creates a false vision of success. The cost of going to cons alone on top of hoping to eat as a freelancer are untenable, IMO.
When people hear that I'm returning to part time work they often ask "are things not going well with your art?"

The problem really is things are going well, but the world is so unstable that I long for some consistency and income that I don't have to pay quarterly taxes on

@lemoustier.bsky.social I had a dream last night that at some festival there were people *cosplaying* as Neanderthals, and I thought, I should pitch a story about this!

Realized it was bc of your instagram pics of the Neanderthal museum exhibit!

I want to say, Jeff, read my book, but, a, I haven't written it yet, and b, @zachweinersmith.bsky.social & @weinersmith.bsky.social's A CITY ON MARS so easily shows the impossibility of "millions" in space in decades. Just the amount of transport that would be needed is absurd!
Jeff can afford to believe in a lot of things that just aren’t gonna happen.
