I'm not getting a PhD in this, but it's good to know that my understanding is broadly correct according to someone who is.

It's like Wright's fitness landscape: LLMs are reaching the peak of their underlying technology, and they're not going to leap to another peak just because they want them to.
LLMs cannot ever generalize to anything meaningful beyond probabilistic pattern matching, and even then they are limited only to data they've seen before during training.

LLMs are a complete technological dead end with no uses, and it boggles my mind we've put so much resources into their R&D

Check Out This New Store

I'm trying to check out local businesses as they open up, and a place called Last Call, a vintage boutique, just opened up off Whyte. This is the fitting room.

The sun keeps rising and the Grand Canyon keeps transforming. Same spot, but every few minutes the light changes everything.

Great locations deserve more than one shot. Patience pays off.

I've read a bunch of books on story structure—because people I work with sometimes like/use these books.

Dan O'Bannon's was the only one I've found worthwhile, not least because he isn't prescriptive. He walks you through some broad strokes he uses to get writing, and how the thinks about story.
man about to invent the greatest science fiction movie ever made "i knew i wanted to do a scary movie on a spaceship with a small number of astronauts"

this is how artists actually talk

Garneau Theatre at Night

Gotta love a large aperture lens, @ilfordphoto.com HP5 at box, and being able to hand hold slow shutter speeds on a Leica.

Peter's recent colour work has just been incredible lately. It's normally great, but here in the depths of winter it's taken on a sense of uneasy stillness, like a spring coiled tight. The contrast of the intense blues and warm yellows of snow and sunlight only serve to enhance that feeling.

Steely Dan's Can't Buy A Thrill is their best album.

I won't be taking questions at this time.

The second image in this set has a tent where a drum circle was playing. Normally I can't fully appreciate drum circles because I don't have the cultural context to get it.

But in this case they did a rendition of Happy Birthday, resolving into the refrain in ways I wasn't expecting. (1/2)
Canoe Volant pt iv

Last part from the Canoe Volant. My only wish is that the event ran longer. With smaller crowds, it would have been lovely to meander for longer.

I recommend opening this one on a bigger screen.

I shot this one at 1/10th of a second on my Leica M3 with the 7Artisans 35mm f1.4 WEN wide open, HP5 at box speed.

I picked up Diana Wynne Jones' The Game to study for one of my authors, and I am again struck by the care and finesse in her words.

Small bits of detail that flesh out the world. A masterclass in showing versus telling.
