I wish there was a generalised version of the -ness suffix. I want to be able to say “there are some things where we don't know if they're red or not” but without “they” and the best I can do is “there are some things whose redness is not known to us” but that doesn't work for red-or-notness.

The issue with stuff like this is that you can hate your leader but agree with their policies. Most Israelis have no issue with the bombs being dropped on Gaza, and hate Netanyahu because of other things, or even because he isn't bombing Gaza enough.

Most people have the political awareness of a flea or other small insect. Almost everyone cares about other people and want what's best for them. Politics is disagreeing about what's best for people. It's often more difficult than you think to disentangle self-interest from altruism.

i think it was deleuze or foucault who said that religious garments like the veil and hijab would each far outlive their respective religions as sexual fetishes and i don't think there's a better contemporary anecdote for this than the zoomers who take up the mantel of "trad life"
I work in theological education and I met with a prospective student once who told me he wanted to be a priest. I asked him which church he went to. He said, "I don't go to church." He didn't see that as an obstacle to his goal of ordination.

If I train an AI model on a single piece of media to produce an almost exact replica as output, have I effectively removed the copyright from that work? There is genuinely no coherent case for why AI companies shouldn't need to get permission to use copyrighted works in their training data.

As someone who is against capital punishment, I condemn both the recent attack on Israeli diplomats and also the actions described below. If you view the events differently, I suggest you reflect on why that is.
In 1938, a stateless Jewish teenager in Paris named Herschel Grynszpan went into the German embassy and shot a diplomat from the Nazi regime. He was arrested and disappeared. The Nazis used this action as the pretext for Kristallnacht, the most famous pogrom in history.

Destroying the most basic low-level ecosystem on the planet in the name of getting more minerals? What could go wrong? I suppose at least it might cut down on our use of African slaves. A better solution would be to stop putting out new iPhones every year.

I hate the farming lobby so much. You can't just call a random benefit UBI and doing so discredits the actual concept of UBI.
Delighted to be able to support the #UBI for Farmers campaign and organise some useful meetings for them. Important for #FoodSecurity and fixing our broken #FoodSystem, doing such damage to #PublicHealth
