This has importance way outside CS/ML. If you ask why DOGE employees believe it’s smart to gut NSF and NIH, I’m afraid the answer is that they’ve bought a story where technical progress can proceed mostly decoupled from scientific knowledge.
After a short era in which people questioned the value of academia in ML, its value is more obvious than ever. Big labs stopped publishing the minute commercial incentives showed up and are relentlessly focused on a singular vision of scaling. Academia is a meaningful complement, bringing...

Just a reminder of some of the context around the TikTok ban: In 2020, Trump tried to ban it via executive order a couple months after K-pop fans used it to organize fake signups to Trump’s Tulsa rally, which led him to publicly overestimate how large the crowd size would be.
