Such an important piece - and UK journalists treating this as a traditional political horse race story eg shouting “will you apologise” at Zelenskyy need to take note
Wrote up something about Techdirt's recent coverage, and why (whether we like it or not) we need to be a "democracy blog" now, rather than just a "tech" blog (not that we've ever been just a tech blog).

This story is *the* story and it impacts everything else.

Why Techdirt Is Now A Democracy Blog (Whether We Like It Or Not)
While political reporters are still doing their view-from-nowhere “Democrats say this, Republicans say that” dance, tech and legal journalists have been watching an unfortunately recogn…

This is Marco Rubio explaining how the USA promised to defend Ukraine forever if they got rid of their nuclear arsenal left after the Soviet Union fell.

This is why lil marco was sinking into the couch. He was hoping we wouldn’t find it…so don’t RT right now this very second.

This isn't a surprising but it is devastating.

The great betrayal of Ukraine begins.

We, in Europe, are in a place of danger.

We all owe Ukraine & its people a debt of gratitude for its extraordinary courage. 😢

This. Right now, UK govt departments, from the Home Office to Education, from Business & Trade to Science, Industry & Technology, ought to be drafting plans to welcome US experts of every discipline as they flee this pogrom against science, innovation and learning.
If the UK was really, really smart, it would now plough tens of billions into research centres and take in all the American academics fleeing the US. Spoiler: the UK is not smart. 🇬🇧
8. It is difficult to overstate what a catastrophe this will be for the US research and education systems, particular in biomedical fields.

It is deliberate and wanton devastation entirely out of scale with any concern about DEI activities on campuses.

The goal is destroy US universities.

Asimov saw this with razor-sharp clarity.

In the end, the ‘cult of ignorance’ and its political representatives won in the US elections, so that they can now undermine democracy and science.

European and US progressive movements must work closely together to fight Trump's aggressive cult.

The UK needs to lead in Europe again. We can't rely on Trump, and Labour hasn't shown the urgency or ambition to fix our relationship with our closest neighbours.

A UK-EU customs union is the first step repairing that relationship.
