For #RootRootRead book that takes place on an island, I read Siracusa by Delia Ephron. Well written and entertaining book in the genre of “rich white people problems.” Just a book about four awful people.

Sorry, @itsallaboutde.bsky.social, not done today. 😂 I read this book, Go: A Coming of Age Novel by Kazuki Kaneshiro, in 1 day (today)! It’s about a young Korean man in Japan & his challenges with fitting in. The writing style is very cool. This review on Goodreads kind of nails it. #RootRootRead
My Root Roo Read bingo card, now with the “a book by someone of a different race, ethnicity, or religion than you” squared checked off. The beautiful cover of “Go: A Coming of Age Novel by Kazuki Kaneshiro” with a teal background that looks like folded paper being turned. Goodreads review about Go: This novel has the rhythm of a Japanese TV drama--fast pacing, ridiculously deep and emotional and/or violent reactions to conflict, a high school setting, and great attention paid to hierarchical obligation. Add a little yakuza, a little pachinko, a little social commentary, and a great sense of place (especially if you're familiar with Tokyo) and there you have it. I loved the matter-of-fact story-telling. I even loved the lack of nuance. Having lived in Japan and also having studied kickboxing there I especially loved the detail about which neighborhood/subway line/train station the protagonist was traveling throughout this novel, and the choreographic details given about the many fistfights. Also, I used to teach English in a Japanese high school where more than a few students had dads who were yakuza, so this was a perfectly nostalgic read for me.

My local coffee shop has a book nook & had this book featured as it’s by a local author. (It’s also signed!) The cover is NOT GOOD but the story sounded so intriguing. And it is! If you like the show Ancient Aliens you’ll like this (complimentary). Really fun #RootRootRead with history/archaeology.

So the US can get involved in a regime-change war (not approved by congress), kidnapping the head of state, but can't afford cancer research, special ed programs, SNAP, WIC, Sesame Street, consumer protections, etc.?

I read an article today where they said that someone had “circum” to their injuries and I can’t stop thinking about how that even got through the editing process and it’s even made me question how the real word is spelled. I finally googled it because I didn’t trust myself anymore 😂
