Until you’ve participated in union contract negotiation it can be hard to conceptualize that an owner or manager would care more about screwing their workers than keeping a business profitable or indeed open at all, but it’s actually not so uncommon!

Yarn lovers are facing higher prices, delays, and supply issues as new U.S. import rules take effect. With parcels under $800 now taxed and many postal services halting deliveries, several beloved European yarn brands have already paused shipping to the U.S. 😿

Obviously this doesn’t make sense empirically (Housing First is proven!) or grammatically (they are now literally housed?) but it makes sense if you understand “homelessness” as referring to a racialized surplus population
HUD Sec. Scott Turner claims that getting people housed doesn't prevent homelessness.

If it’s a bubble, then explain why 10% of the value of the entire stock market is just selling shovels, checkmate
Nvidia gets the spotlight, but *two* major groups are selling shovels in the AI gold rush, who profit whether or not AI products pan out: Chipmakers and Big Cloud—Google, Microsoft + Amazon.

A new study by @davidthewid.bsky.social + Nathan Kim shows how the AI boom is fueling Big Cloud's land grab:

I’ve been using it for Spanish since this past winter, and the decline in quality since the inclusion of AI is striking. The things it’s teaching me make no sense anymore. As my best friend put it, “Duolingo’s goal is not to teach you a language, but to keep you using Duolingo.”

Eh it’s an argument I see a lot. Wild misspecification of what the humanities are leads to (well meaning) defenses that draw on morality and ethics. Of course humanities aren’t a bulwark against fascism. It is that eliminating them is evidence of fascism. That’s the point.

Why? Two of the answers lie at the root of many of our problems: unthinking male macho BS, and cheapness.
