"In 1930 Germany is a liberal democracy with elections, parliament, and the rule of law. Just four years later, freedom of speech is over, most of the political opposition is in jail, and the govt is in the hands of murderers. This is the story of how democracy died"

Lost amid the noise is the fact that the president just tried to throw six members of Congress in prison because he didn't like what they said. Per @sbg1.bsky.social you have to go back to 1798 to find a congressman prosecuted for exercising his right to free speech www.newyorker.com/news/letter-...
Donald Trump’s Disingenuous Promise to Champion Free Speech
It is Donald Trump’s systematic campaign to stamp out dissent and punish those who disagree with him that will be remembered as among the most singularly un-American aspects of his disruptive tenure.

Trump made the mistake of doing all his shitty stuff so loudly that even the Trumper's who don't pay attention couldn't avoid seeing what was happening.
New poll: In 2024, low-engagement voters went for Trump over Harris by 11 percentage points. But now they disapprove of the way he's handling the presidency by 13. They have moved 25 points against Trump — 2x as large as the shift for high-knowledge voters www.gelliottmorris.com/p/trump-lost...
Trump has lost the voters who weren’t paying attention in 2024
The least-engaged Americans have swung 25 points against him since 2024 — about twice the shift among everyone else. Trump has flattened the engagement gap.

As I say here, there is no scientific justification to revoke the engagement finding. In fact, over the last 15+ yrs, the evidence of how climate change affects our health has only grown. Higher risk of allergies, dementia, fertility, heart disease, and death: that’s what’s on the line. @nature.org
There is No Scientific Justification to Revoke the Endangerment Finding
The U.S. EPA's decision to repeal the Endangerment Finding will limit the government's ability to regulate emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act.

Take Big Money Out of Our Politics
British politics is awash with money from super rich donors. In 2023, two-thirds of all private donations came from just 19 people. These so-called ‘mega donors’ enjoy privileged access to political p...

With my PR hat on, I would suggest there are some non-apology “apologies” that can actually make a situation worse.
If you can only bring yourself to apologise “if your choice of language has offended some people in the UK and Europe”, it’s probably best to say nothing at all.

To be fair, this works with lager too.
Went for an Indian and had a few pints of stout afterwards last night. Hadn't had this combo before but I have literally shat myself thin today. Winning.

Opportunism and moral rot. And especially the disconnect between GOP leaders - products of elite educations who aspire to elite institutions - and their voters, who will let them stay in DC as long as they pretend to believe that vaccines are evil and all that crap.
Tom, what do you think caused the overwhelming majority of republicans to abandon everything they said they believed in?

At least we now know the source of Frost's hard right mania, and the likely cause of his utter lack of real world understanding of politics and economics.

That's the truth, but it's not only the political system, it's the nexus with the billionaire owned media too.

And coming down those same tracks in the UK is the fascist Farage.
Donald Trump didn't break the political system on his own.

Our broken political system is why we have Trump.

Now imagine the kind of pull the Musks, Bollores and Ambanis of this world can exert on the most vulnerable figures within diplomatic hierarchies
There's been a lot of Epstein stuff written, but this--about a high-ranking UN official who corresponded extensively with him, got him into high-level foreign policy meetings, and shared internal UN readouts from top-level conversations--was the most revelatory to me: certioraris.com/2026/02/10/e...

Whomp whomp two weeks later and you can add the full on introduction of trans section 28 to your trans history timeline
Yeah no i really think you kinda made a fool of yourself if you have a nice chat with Keir Starmer about a bloody awareness week
Just think if we’re giving labour mps credit for gestures like signing support for trans history week it just reduces pressure on them to Actually do anything. They ought to be confronted by their hypocrisy and to defy it will take a fuck of a lot more than wishing for our “dignity and respect“

Ending this operation is not enough.

We need justice and accountability. That starts with independent investigations into the murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, economic restitution for businesses impacted, abolishing ICE, and the impeachment of Kristi Noem.

Wtf?

I saw Threads, and "hope" does not appear in the available vocabulary for describing how it (rightly) made me feel.

It's a fkn warning, FFS.

Take it seriously.
Threads director Mick Jackson has expressed worry over the upcoming remake’s focus on finding “hope even in the most challenging of times.”

“That one phrase worried me,” he tells Empire. “Hope is not part of nuclear war.”
