The sounds of Blue Oyster Cult's (Don't Fear) The Reaper blared through Wren Westbrook's headphones as she laid her head against the passenger window. Hours worth of empty fields, corn stalks, and billboards with anti-abortion slogans and Bible verses littered the bland landscape that stretched out into the horizon in every direction. Gone were the mountains that acted as the backdrop of her childhood. Gone were the pine trees and the pristine creeks. He Died For Your Sins Don't Kill His Miracles, a handmade billboard sitting at the edge of a soybean field alongside the highway read. She wondered what drove a person to make these signs, were they hoping to convert wayward strangers, scare sinners straight, or just to preach to the choir? It's Adam AND Eve!
NOT Adam AND Steve! Keep Marriage Traditional! Another read. That one made her stomach churn.

Wren knew why they had left and why they couldn't return to Boulder, but that didn't make the change of scenery any less painful. Who knew that such barren wasteland was just on the other side of the Rockies.

Knowing what she had lost was a deep throbbing pain that sat in her chest. Knowing what had been stolen from her younger brother, Oliver was a pain that was immeasurable. Though she felt terrible for him, she

couldn't help but to envy him as well. To be small again.
To think there was a sort of moral calculus that dictated the way the world worked. To not know that bad things more often than not happen to good people. That the worst amongst them often go unpunished for their crimes. When adults say that it's complicated or that not everything is black and white, it's a lie used to shield themselves and their children from the uncomfortable reality of things.

She had seen the true face of it all. The dark crevices people avoid and pretend don't exist. She had fallen in and she didn't know how to escape it all. She knew too much now. She'd do anything trade places with the young boy sleeping in the backseat, but she wouldn't wish her waking reality onto anyone else, especially not him. Not Oliver. Her job, as she saw it, was to tell him, to warn him, of what lies in those cracks in reality. So he's ready if or when he goes tumbling down one. It's what their parents tried to do for them. It's what she and her mother would continue to do for him.

The song hit a note that made the scar across her face tingle unpleasantly. Discomfort came and went of its on accord. As frequent as the sensations were, Wren never quite grew accustomed to them. She wondered if she had kept using the scar cream the doctors had suggested if these constant disturbances would be lessened, but she often ignored these thoughts. After all, her mother said the large diagonal trench that decided her face in two gave her look character. Oliver thought it made her look like a pirate. She thought it made her look like someone to avoid, which was the main reason she stopped using the cream. She hopped the tingly electric buzz that erupted for the scar was temporary though. They had been less frequent since her... accident. A strange feeling that often enveloped her mind when ever she saw her

𝘍𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘧𝘪𝘨𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵—as one Nebraskan shop clerk said in an effort to seem more 𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵—is that her dad would have thought it looked cool. He was such a boy.

𝑯𝒂𝒗𝒔 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒏𝒐𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒆𝒅 𝒊𝒕 𝒚𝒆𝒕?

The voice rattled at the back of her skull.

𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆'𝒔 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝒄𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒔 𝒂𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆. 𝑰𝒔𝒏'𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆?

Wren cleared her throat and rolled her shoulders back—the agreed upon signal to get the voice, Vox, to shut up.

𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒎𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒊𝒔 𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒚𝒐𝒖.

Wren slid her headphones off and turned "What was that, sorry..."

Viktoriya, Wren's mother, lowered the volume on the car's radio. It had been playing NPR nonstop since they left. She had spent half of the trip retuning every time they entered a different region with a different public station.

"We're almost there. I want to show you something... interesting. Look." She nodded forward down the road.

On the left side of the single lane road was a sign reading Welcome To Sturgis. It's background was colored with a faded yellow and it's accents were a sort of off Hunter's Green. Next to the words on the sign was a little illustrated cartoon green... dot... person….. thing. It had tube like limbs, big shoes, white gloves, and a wide expressive smile. Buildings and houses could be seen in the distance just past the sign. But that wasn't the detail that caught Wren's eye. On the other side of the road there was dense wall of trees that stretched far into the

horizon on the roht side. It was a forest. A large one. It almost looked out of place with how abruptly it started.

"Oh. Is... that a nature preserve? Or maybe a state park?" Wren asked.

She hadn't seen anything about outdoorsy activities when she read up on her new school. Surely a high school that close to such massive forest would offer some kind of camping course or extracurricular.

"Nope. Try again." Viktoriya responded with a little
smile.

Wren chuckled "Oh, are we playing another game of Why Is This Town So Strange? You're favorite pastime."

"Don't kid yourself, you like it too... now look outside your window..." Viktoriya said as the car rolled into the towns limits and alongside the woods"... what do you see along side the road?"

Wren peered out of her window. In the tall grass, between the road and the forest, something unnatural laid half buried, overgrown, and covered in moss and rust.

"Oh! Train tracks!"

"Okay, now what do notice about them?"

Wren looked back towards her mother. It was obvious where she was leading her with the question, but she answered it anyway as if it wasn't "They're abandoned.
Looks like no one's used them for at least as long as I've been alive."

I’m a slow reader. I think it’s way I approach reading, I like to take my time with a book. I usually try to read a chapter or two a sitting maybe three times a week. It’s nothing I’m ashamed of, but I do think I need to “fix” that habit.

The Trump Admin isn’t “waiting for an excuse to declare Martial law”, we’re already in it. Just like every war the United States has waged since WWII, the executive branch no longer feels obligated to declare anything when it uses its military force. Stay Aware.

If Sinners or One Battle After Another wins best picture I’ll be happy—Though I’m leaning more towards Sinners, the characterization of a lot of the black characters in OBAA is a little problematic, especially when it comes to the women. It was good to see Regina Hall though, I love that woman!
