I hope New Yorkers will challenge Mamdani about this. Too often, people feel they need to be absolutely for or against a politician — ignoring their missteps or throwing them out with the bathwater. You can like and/or believe in someone and still challenge them to deliver on their promises.

I was unaware it was A.I. until I read about it today.
February 17, 2026 at 11:01 PM
After reading about it more, it appears that Ancestry's "colorizing" tool uses A.I. per what is stated petapixel.com/2022/06/02/a..., and www.ancestry.com/corporate/ne... [this is the one which confirms it is A.I.], so I deleted all my "colorized" photos from my tree.

I have to commend @packrat74.bsky.social (who I think I interacted with on Twitter some years ago too) for speaking out about A.I. / ChatGPT use for genealogy. I've done so myself already and have been blocked by two genealogist, both of whom claims ChatGPT can be used "responsibly" for research.
February 17, 2026 at 7:15 PM
Last part of this thread, but I actually vaguely remember possibly interacting with her in the past on Twitter. But, of course when I deleted Twitter, I lost all of that, so I can't truly know, but I don't remember her responding this way then. Sigh. (5/5)

Since I am blocked, I can't see what her original skeet said, but from my memory it was about using A.I. to transcribe documents. You don't need to use those tools for transcription. I don't support using any A.I. tools for genealogy. (4/5)

Thanks to using a private browser I saw her account page. She has a comment referencing me by name, saying I should have asked a question rather than posted something snarky... Okay. Funny enough I actually would agree w/ her politically. Also, she is asking people abt. A.I. use. (3/5)

Apparently, tensions are high when it comes to this. If you go to her YouTube channel [https://www.youtube.com/@frompapertopeoplepodcast4889/videos], she has *at least* three videos about using ChatGPT with genealogy. All I can say is I don't support the use of ChatGPT for genealogy. (2/5)

Since I'm blocked, I didn't even remember who I was addressing this too. I'm pretty sure it was Ancestors Alive! Genealogy as I'm blocked (see image 1). The only reason I say that is I got a message on Instagram today, which I cannot reply to, by this person too, angry I told them this. (1/5)

Okay. Why should people use it *at all*? You can easily do research without ChatGPT. It isn't hard. I don't understand why anyone should ever use a service which literally steals data to function and has horrible environmental consequences. That should be a pretty clear ethical line.
February 16, 2026 at 9:42 PM
Okay. You can do research without those tools. You don't need ChatGPT or any similar A.I. tools to organize research. There are many guides online on how to do research without these tools. I agree there are many problems with the tech. That is why they shouldn't be used, *at all*, period.
February 16, 2026 at 9:32 PM
Okay. Then why are you advertising it as "Everything listed in this guide is done with the free version of ChatGPT" and pairing possible research w/ ChatGPT *at all*? Did you use ChatGPT to put it together? I strongly believe ChatGPT should not be used in ANY research, genealogical or not.
February 16, 2026 at 8:56 PM
Yeah I've see a worrying number of genealogists on here use ChatGPT... I may even have to write a section of a newsletter about it, because of how pervasive it is, thinking that using ChatGPT saves them "time" or something... sigh.
February 16, 2026 at 7:32 PM
I would much rather do actual research in a library or archive than use some awful exploitative tool like this, or even go to a cemetery and look at a tombstone, and write down notes on paper. I don't understand at all, why you think this is so great. It isn't, at all.
February 16, 2026 at 7:29 PM
Yeah not surprising there. I am disturbed by how many posts when you look up "genealogy chatgpt" on here are genealogists singing the praises of ChatGPT, like it some magical tool they can use rather than... doing actual research. Sigh.
February 16, 2026 at 7:27 PM
Yeah I didn't see that challenge. The embrace of ChatGPT by genealogists is utterly disturbing and disconcerting. You can investigate an ancestor's occupation by actually reading some history books by established scholars in a certain period, rather using a tool like that.
February 16, 2026 at 7:26 PM
I feel like there is an easier way to do that than using ChatGPT... just saying. You could actually hire a real genealogist instead.
February 16, 2026 at 7:24 PM
Oh no. Well I can tell you this is definitely something I'm never buying. Why not make a guide for doing actual research, not using some copyright-stealing tool? You can never rust A.I. to give you "the answers."
February 16, 2026 at 7:22 PM
Ugh. Couldn't you have just commissioned someone draw this infographic, or make it yourself, rather than using ChatGPT?
February 16, 2026 at 7:21 PM
Yuck. Using A.I. to analyze old documents is utterly disgusting. Not sure why you'd even make a video of this in the first place.
February 16, 2026 at 7:21 PM
No surprise there. A.I. really can never be trusted to do research.
February 16, 2026 at 7:19 PM
This post is sarcastic, right?
February 16, 2026 at 7:19 PM
I seriously doubt that. What a terrible take.
