God, this is grim.
When I was a teenager in the 80s things weren’t always great, but there was a sense that we were moving forward, that the world was getting better for women and girls.
But now this aggressive sexism and entitlement has become permissible again. We’re regressing.
Relatedly, was reading Naomi Beinart's piece in the Guardian this morning, & thinking about how (increasingly) true it must be for NZ too. | As boys shift to the right, we are seeing the rise of the ‘new chill girl’ www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

1/ A longtime Wired editor just wrote a mush-brained essay about how he totally missed the political rot of Silicon Valley (& still doesn't get it).

But in the late 1990s, a Wired journalist warned of a toxic ideology bubbling up from tech. Paulina Borsook has largely been erased. Let's change that

I try to be understanding, but jesus christ, the whole story is about how infiltration (which I’ve also covered for years) is not necessary when agencies are openly recruiting them, and they’ve volunteering, and their missions are now the same
The "new" Proud Boys? Um… hate to break it to you, but many of these federal agents are literally Proud Boys, as are many local police officers. Proud Boy infiltration of law enforcement is no secret.
Federal Agents Are the New Proud Boys
It used to be far-right groups who flooded cities wearing masks and military gear, looking for a fight. Now it’s anonymous federal agents who are violently attacking people on the street.

An old review from 2022, but as embarrassed as I was to discover Baldwin Lee only recently (especially as a fellow native Tennessean and Chinese-American photographer), I'm also super excited to share that discovery with whoever else might appreciate his work ✨ www.newyorker.com/culture/phot...
Baldwin Lee’s Extraordinary Pictures from the American South
A new book—the first-ever collection of Lee’s work—and a solo exhibition in New York make the case that he is one of the great overlooked luminaries of American picture-making.

Booooooo. Guess I won’t be using WeTransfer anymore.
WeTransfer just changed their TOS giving themselves permission to train AI on any content you transfer and produce derivative works based on content you transfer that they are allowed to monetize and you are not allowed payment for.

Stop using WeTransfer.

"SCOTUS allows Trump admin to deport people to random countries with no notice"

Honestly still can't believe that I wrote this headline today, let alone that the U.S. Supreme Court's majority did so.
SCOTUS allows Trump admin to deport people to random countries with no notice
Justice Sotomayor called the order a "gross ... abuse" of the court's authority. Also: Law Dork in the media.

The disparity btwn what’s actually happening in Los Angeles and the way it’s being mischaracterized is one of the biggest stress tests of modern media in recent memory. Botted socials, AI, old clips, declining literacy—it’s like seeing a broken emergency response system hit by a storm.

Love to see these initiatives. Profs whose courses have been canceled by universities bowing to the Feds, starting their own courses. People of a certain age may recall the 70s, under Reagan, Thatcher, Mulroney and Pinochet, when free universities became a resistance thing. History is never linear.
Latest podcast is out: Get in everyone, we are going to Resistance Summer School!

Thank you to everyone who indicated they would like to take my course on Race, Media and International Affairs 101.
