The gap between what the right thinks happens on college campuses and what actually happens is absurd. I had some great students and some awful ones; we talked about some difficult topics, from sexual violence to capitalism to exploitation; it was fine. Nobody lost their shit, because we're adults.

This is what infuriates me with the Right's attacks on higher ed: they are profoundly anti-student. They hold young people in contempt. They assume students mindlessly swallow anything they're told, that they cannot think for themselves. They couldn't be more wrong about what we and our students do.

i find this image so fascinating. it is both a literal example of authoritarianism but also a second-hand reproduction of the aesthetics of other authoritarian states. it's like a simulacra of authoritarianism whose purpose is to attempt to make the simulacra real.
This is a real photograph of Washington, DC this week, where the United States president has ordered military occupation in peacetime, and ordered the display of colossal portraits of himself.

10 months ago, a company across the world put my neighbor's access to medical care at risk, giving us 2wks notice that software behind our 40 electric car chargers would be shut down.

This is the story of how my neighborhood broke free from this potential disaster.

This is no exaggeration- the bill genuinely bans all expression between 10pm and 8am, & also bans university employees from restricting speech, meaning… that nobody is allowed to enforce the no-speech rule? Fascist & incoherent, designed to be a rationalization of cracking down on left wing speech

The saga of the NYT's anti-Mamdani story taken from notorious white supremacist Jordan Lasker (they call him an "academic") gets even more amazing: Lasker's only impactful paper, which claimed white people are smarter, is infamous: it misused data so badly it got his tenured co-author fired. 2/

Spoke with an attorney who was harassed by law enforcement after providing pro bono help to immigrants. Wouldn't ID themselves or the agency.

My guess is he isn't the only one. If you've experienced similar harassment or know someone who has, please feel free to reach out.

Bloomberg says that Trump will immediately declare a national energy emergency. We all know why — it will be about gutting environmental protection. But still worth noting that US energy is actually doing fine, with production > consumption and exports > imports 1/

I hope this isn't true! Birthright citizenship is fantastic. It's an engine for assimilation and has kept the US from having a permanent migrant underclass (like some European countries have). It ensures that all who are born here can participate fully, and better brings us together as a society.
I'm worried that the left/libertarian side has rested on "precedent" and is now completely unable to make a compelling argument FOR birthright citizenship. Like it will literally just sound like they're defending a loophole since they've already ceded 99% of the issue to restrictionists

I would like to speak up today for the trans community.

You see, I know a bit of what it’s like to be politically scapegoated. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, suddenly anyone in America who had any amount of Japanese ancestry became suspect. Politicians preyed upon ignorance and fear. /1

Holy shit. I’m tapped into Cato’s network and somehow missed this.

Can’t say what effect more coverage would have had, given that truth doesn’t seem to matter.

But it’s stunning. Trump did precisely what he accused Biden of doing. He released dangerous people for a political advantage.

When people say "safe," they really mean "I don't want to see homeless people."
Just a heads-up, you're going to see a lot of credentialed liberals on here telling you that if you want to beat Trump, you have to agree with him that cities are hellholes of "chaos" that must be made "livable."

Trying to slipstream with fascism is no way to beat fascism.
