If we had responded to Covid by normalizing masking, providing respirators in healthcare & adopting clean air standards…we could have beaten the virus.

We would also be seeing less measles, colds & flu.

We would all be healthier.

I believe history will see it as one of our greatest failures.

Applying for a Canada Council for the Arts literary grant?

The old ones have been retired and new ones have launched in their place. Artistic Creation is the new $25k grant (max is now $75k) and Micro-Grants is the new PD grant (still $10k but we can send 3 applications per year!). #CanadaCouncil

This is what it's like living with a hearing sensitivity. I especially hate when I crank up a movie to hear and then my ears get painfully blasted!

They need to watch the videos by former trad wives who are living out of their cars, taking minimum wage jobs, etc. bc those husbands decided to trade in their wives for younger models, AFTER the trad wives did everything at home so he could be successful in the workplace.

Greg could go anywhen, but he only ever visited 1989. His time travel agent had teased him. "Choosing #nostalgia over dinosaurs and castles again, huh? You must really like hair bands!"

It was an expensive vacation, but it was worth it. He smiled as the front door opened. "Hi, Mom."

This whole thread. 👍
So.

I am deeply disappointed in this pro-AI take from a writing instructor who I've respected for years. 🧵

First, I could talk about how the technology behind AI/LLMs is based on the direct theft of writers. [1][2]

THIS omg THIS!
Why else is it, that the people who are almost always championing AI in art and writing, are people who are privileged and established in their field? They're almost always older, white, and in positions of both professional and economic comfort.

AI is part of the fascist project to make us all stupider and more impoverished and dependent on the tech overlords, pass it on
The major AI industry leaders stood next to Donald Trump at his inauguration. They talk about replacing artists and writers and creatives as a feature, not a bug. AI is deeply conservative and it astonishes me that people who are opposed to the conservative project would rely on it so carelessly

The whole AI conversation is actually a great way to separate people who write from people who “create content”

idk man, I actually enjoy writing. It makes me feel alive and engaged and I feel lucky that I get to spend so much time doing it. Having written is great, but brainstorming and researching and thinking through things is the real point. You couldn't pay me any amount to give that up to a machine.

I've long regarded Brevity as one of the highest-tier online lit mags out there, especially for flash memoir/CNF. It's a journal I've always aspired to be published in. I'm glad Bossiere said this, though I wonder now about how Brevity will be percieved after the Brevity Blog pro-AI post.
The Brevity Blog is a separate editorial team & pub than the literary magazine. As the Brevity lit mag's managing editor, I can say we do not & will never consider essays written—even partially—by LLMs. Ethics aside, we consider AI anathema to what makes art worth making & stories worth telling

in short, ai steals, doesn't fact check, and the environmental impact is terrible.

a recently released study says it's making us stupider.

as a tool it can be useful but the cons are so alarming it should be highly rationed.

and if you don't want to write, don't.

brief enough for brevity?

People are being fired for wearing a mask to work. This is horrible and against public health. We need to pass laws that explicitly protect the right to mask.
