I've been to some countries where people live under military rule or autocracy. And without fail, one of the questions I get when they ask about life in the U.S. is whether it's true that Americans just let homeless people die on the street.
During freezing temperatures in Port Arthur, Texas, a 61-year-old homeless man was found dead in his wheelchair outside a convenience store.
He was wearing a hospital gown and no shoes. Authorities say he had been released from a hospital the previous day.

This is an extremely useful lens through which to see almost everything Trump does, and how the media treats it/him
There's both the dumb Trump angle and the cynical strategy aspect to this. Former is he doesn't understand any of the details and so this tumbles out as his mangled version. The latter is it's deliberately overshooting what they might actually do, to make their actual attacks seem less extreme.
President Trump doubled down on his call for the Republican Party to “nationalize” voting in the U.S., even as the White House tried to walk it back and members of his own party criticized the idea.
