keep in mind this was during the Obama administration too when pop culture and politics got increasingly enmeshed (they always have been but it got to a uniquely bad point in the early 10s)
This is bleak: Jes Staley, currently CEO of Barclays, reassuring Epstein that popular revolt against financial elites is unlikely because capitalism and pop culture have defanged social movements, leaving people more invested in consumption than justice.

It’s gotten worse: now we’re at “trans women must atone for male privilege because misogyny didn't affect them”, something with pretty nasty implications if you think about it for TWO SECONDS

something I remember from the big tech layoffs of a couple years ago is seeing coworkers with excellent performance reviews - even some who had literally just been promoted - getting thrown overboard for completely opaque reasons and realizing that was part of the point
At the same time, the extent of the Washington Post layoffs highlight how it didn't matter how hardworking, loyal, smart, collaborative, award-winning, competitive, knowledgeable and devoted so many of the staff were. It wasn't enough to prevent being laid off by one of the richest men in the world.
