The economic tradeoff between America and Europe is that America has much more expensive costs for essentials like health care but much more (relatively) affordable consumer goods. Once that's out the window, whew.

Two months after its long-awaited reopening and one month after apparently missing its projected date for returning to full capacity, the Trieste-Opčina tram, now running once every 45 minutes, is a big draw for locals and tourists alike on a mild spring Sunday.

Not to be a wide-eyed naïf about such things but... am I right in thinking that they levelled an entire building to get to one guy and *that* is not controversial to anyone in the American media or political class, only that this information was recklessly shared in an unsecured chat?

I published a piece yesterday about the impossibility of teaching Jewish Studies at this moment in history, and in particular how ridiculous it is to try to teach Jewish History amidst bans on DEI: slate.com/life/2025/03...

'sold as slave labor to El Salvador' is I honestly think a fair way of describing it
Totally agree with this. Flying a person to a third country that they may never have been to, directly into a prison where they are going to be forced to do hard labor, is not a deportation; it's something else entirely.
@washingtonpost.com They were not DEPORTED. Deported means sending them back to their country of origin. These people were sent to a maximum security prison in El Salvador, without any due process or any analysis as to whether they feared harm in El Salvador!

Researching concentration camps, I often saw governments justify atrocities and genocide against a violent opposition by saying "they would do worse to us if they could," without acknowledging that these opponents lacked any real capacity to rival the level of state violence that had been unleashed.
The Senate Democratic leader says it can’t be genocide if you were “provoked.”

That is just a stunning thing to believe let alone say on the record.

Schumer's whole plan, in his words, is "I am focused on bringing Trump’s numbers down, his popularity down, exposing what he has done to America and what he will do," but when asked about specifics like Columbia & Khalil, he leaps to Trump's defense while admitting he doesn't even know the details.
Here are Schumer’s responses on Columbia and Khalil:
